For photo printing I own a epson stylus photo 785epx, for everyting else I use my brother HL-1440. A better solution would be to get the wonderful canon i450. My gf has it and the print quality (especially photos) is awesome and it's VERY cheap to maintain. You can find the thing for less than $50 - it's an insanely good deal...
Other printers that I've used:
HP Inkjets- great print quality (for the most part) but the inks to get expensive.. I loved my old HP deskjet 810...
Epson all in ones (cx5200 is what I own) - good quality and it's nice to have the scanner too.. Only problem is that it (like many other epsons) clog like crazy.. I had to RMA one because it just would not print certain colors (clogged printheads)... I've heard that they're working on this problem... Photos look great on it but epson text tends to be a little fuzzy
Lexmark z52- why did I bother? Oh yeah, it cost $19.. Too bad the ink costs $60+
