I am putting my laptop on eBay and I don't want to be scammed.

what precautions should I take and what should i look for in a scammer.

i will only ship to verified/confirmed paypal addresses in the US, what about internationally?

I heard awhile ago you could have the buyer send the payment as a "service" and that would deny all types of refunds on paypal... does that work?

If you have the buyer pay through Western Union, you can be assured that you will have the money in hand before you ship anything. Perfectly safe. Outside of that, I would not ship anything overseas, the risk of getting scammed is waaaay to big, and you'll have no recourse.

For that matter, even inside the US I would not use paypal, that's pretty much scam central USA, but that's just my 0.02.

Awesome idea, I'll be able to buy your laptop for next to nothing because 90% of the bidders will run away, and I'll just throw in a new drive!

OP, ignore the FUD and just DBAN the thing.

make sure to tell it to someone who is buying it for a gift for a family member over seas and wants you to ship it to another place over seas and make sure they also pay you more than you are asking and that they use their own fedex account to ship it.

Nigeria means business!!!

I would be leery of international sales, but just make sure you DBAN the HD multiple times!

Sell it on craigslist, cash only and offer to meet buyer at a public place, like a starbucks.

paypal to a verified address only in the US only.

no international. you don't increase your market enough to be worth it.

Fixed that for you. Extra 10% market share = worth it.

No buy it now. If you list it with a buy it now a Nigerian will "buy" it and then you are screwed.

BIN w/ immediate payment, set it up so that your PP account only accepts payments from users with a confirmed address. Only ship to that confirmed address. Get insurance & signature confirmation (add those to your cost of shipping). Ship double boxed with no indication there's a laptop inside.

CL cash only is still the best way to go. Usually end up getting about the same as you would on eBay minus their fees.

"Verified" means absolutely nothing. Confirmed is everything.

I'd trust paypal over Western Union. With cashiers checks, they don't find out they're fraudulent until a few weeks later, at which point YOU'RE responsible.

Don't ship to Nigeria. Apparently a lot of old ladies buying laptops for their grandsons live there.

So you'd trust a service that allows people to dispute payments at anytime (within 30 days I believe) over a service that provides you with physical cash in hand before you ship?

I really dont think it's worth the extra effort to post a laptop for sale on eBay. Laptops are in rather decent demand that you can easily sell it on craigslist locally with cash return compared to having to deal with shipping, payal and ebay fees.
Plus I find that eBay prices don't always seem higher than local selling prices...great for buyer and poor for sellers.
