What possesses people to park directly next to you when there are other spots open?

I recently got a new car, and I'm very protective of it. I purposely park it waaaaaaaaaay in the back of the lot with a good 5 open spaces on each side of me. Several times now, I have come out and found other cars parked directly next to me with 4 spaces on the other side of the stranger's car.

What the hell possesses people to do this? Do they need some sort of visual reference point for parking? Inability to make a decision where to park? Cause it's really fucking annoying. I park way the hell out in the middle of nowhere so someone DOESNT park next to me yet some moron always does. Makes me want to key their car. :|

they need coverage in the back so they don't get seen when they hit their crack pipe

honestly though, I don't know. I was the same way with my old car, but eventually something will happen. just inspect it every day so you can take care of scratches and stuff right when they happen.

what kind of car did you get?

Why are people so protective of their cars that they freak out if anyone parks near them? You're a half step away from parking diagonally across two spots.

Congrats. I bet it's always a Ford that parks next to you, eh? :)

That's when someone will key the car instead of just dinging it on accident. ;)

So, essentially you want 11 spaces for your car, or else you get annoyed.

I noticed the same, but it doesn't bother me like it used to.

I think some people do it on purpose just to piss you off.

No no no. It's like this:

Say you're in a mens restroom and there's six urinals. No one else is in there, but you go to the back corner urinal. Well, lo and behold some one else comes in and takes the urinal right next to you. Sure, there's no "real" problem with him taking that urinal, but he could've just as easily taken one of the other five away from you.

Same thing goes with parking spots. If there's a 100 parking spots open in the back of the parking lot, there's no reason why someone needs to park right next to you. There's plenty of room.

I most certainly would if I knew they were trying to keep space.

Yes but OP says it makes him want to key their car.

If you park over the lines like a jackass, I may park my big dirty truck right next to your spotless, brand new vehicle. Within the lines of my parking spot, of course, but I won't guarantee you won't get your clothes filthy when you get back in your car. :p I wouldn't single you out if you know how to park, though.

Maybe all the other spots were taken when the other driver came, but all the other people left just before you got back.

Obviously done on purpose. But if it's a nice/new car as well, they may feel some connection with you.

I purposely park next to people like you. I even park parallel with morons who park diagonally across multiple spaces. One time, I was getting back into my car as the other guy was coming out of the store, and he flipped out about it. HILARIOUS.

They want the security of parking by another car. Or they want to see how crappy their car is next to you.

When I was young I had a shitty buick. I purposly parked it next to the people that parked their nice cars away from other cars.

Also, get over it. The newnessitty of your car will wear off.

You're probably the kind of asshole that stands directly next to someone when theres a bank of ten urinals and the one guy is all the way to the end and every other one is open.

I'm surprised that you would admit in public to being that anal about your car. I'm going to look for people parking like this from now on and park next to them. :)

That's totally different...there are some VERY strict social rules about urinals in the men's bathroom.;)

Out of completely idle curiosity, did it ever occur to you that during the natural course of the day, all the other spots were in fact taken, possibly and/or unrelated to a freak accident of some kind that saw an influx of a dozen cars at once; which thus resulted in the spot directly next to you being the only available spot to park in? And in due course, someone took said spot, and during the continual course of events in a timely manner the other cars left - leaving the end result of the APPEARANCE of them choosing the spot directly next to you, when in fact that was the only logical choice at the time of their decision?

Paranoia will get to you in the end, my friend.
