It depends what P2P network you are talking about. Kazaa uses 1214 but others use different ports. Also, Kazaa can connect to the network using just about any open port so it is pretty hard to block at Layer 4. Most of the time it has to be done at higher layers of the OSI model. What you should do is educate your roommates about P2P and at the very least get them to not share. That will help out your lag times.

ok like that list is way to long and ive tried searching in it and failed...

can somebody just quickly tell me what port ranges i'd have to block, to allow nothing but gaming over the LAN?
like msn and kazaa still work when i block port 80... but if i block ALL ports then will they still be able to play a tcp/ip or ipx network game?

thanks eh! :)

If you're playing LAN games only on your local subnet, it doesn't matter what you block. If you want to play on the internet using TCP/IP, you can block all ports and you probably won't be able to host a game. However, you should be able to establish a connection to another host. Firewalls usually work only one way. So when you block ports, it only affects incoming traffic. Of course, if you initiate the connection, the firewall will allow some traffic through from the system you're connected to.

now that I finally got highspeed connection, can start playing around with fun stuff :)

first on the list is downloading music, any recommendation for good (free) P2P music sharing apps ?

but also I'd like to learn more about the security problems loading p2p software on my system - got any usefull URLs that I can read up on ? I have a pc 3 home network behind a router connected to a cable ISP. One of the systems having sensitive info (eg banking, bills etc) that I'd like to protect. I heard p2p sharing apps open up every on your system ?

thanks in advance

The term "p2p" is a generic label applied towards any program that's designed to allow for searching and downloading from members of an ad-hoc connected network. There are a number of these, unrelated to each other, and they will use different TCP and/or UDP ports. Read the FAQs for the program(s) you are using, and they will tell you what port(s) they use.
