I hate how minorities are allowed more leeway. For instance, I'm at work today, and we received a yellow pages ripoff entitled "The Asian Pages". It works exactly like the yellow pages, except all of the business owners are Asian. If I had developed a book "The Caucasian Pages", I would have all sorts of racist comments thrown my way. I dunno if that falls under the same category as PC, but either way, it sucks.

FK

Stop whining and put it into effect. Start your own Caucasian Pages. I'm sure the creators hear crap from people like you, so you can hear crap from people like them.

Great idea. I should complain that I find something offensive and do that same thing. I'd rather people use the standard yellow pages than a Caucasian Pages.

And "people like me", huh? The people who don't care which race their lawyer is? The people who don't care what the race of their realtor is? The people who aren't racists?

FK

So to recap then, you're the one who finds it offensive that Asians made "The Asian Pages?" So you're the one being PC?

I don't think you get it....

This thread has a lot of positive potential, but trying to read each other's minds is not going to help. It sure as taxes doesn't make you look any better than the PC extremists. More mature exchange and less dismissive mockery, please, before it goes too far downhill.

How whenever I say that there are millions of ways to "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps", no one is "held down by the man", and that organizations like the NAACP do more to hurt race relations than to heal them people gasp and call me a racist...

I could see the snickers commercial getting lots of flak, and if there are people upset, I can see why they can be pissed.

GM on the other hand? That commercial was adorable ><

Hah yah we are breeding a whole new age of losers by letting every kid win. Some people at work were telling me about how baseball and such is played now where every kid has to play a set number of innings and there is no 'winner' when the game is over. Give me a break.

This is a tough situation. It's not right for a lot of kids to feel like losers because they don't have the same talents as others, but it's also not right to tell those kids that they're just like the ones who are more talented. The key is to emphasize not what you get, or what you have, but what you get out of what you have, as in the parable of the talents. In order to help a kid reach his full potential, you have to know the kid well enough to assess his abilities, both active and dormant. This is not a skill set that is widely taught, admired, or rewarded in modern American society, which is a large part of why our schools are getting nuttier and nuttier.

Correct. Orwell's 1984 mentions newspeak and doublethink. Brave New World introduces nothing of the sort as far as I can recall. Doublespeak is a military term.

The constant fear of saying something simple like "Move Star X is gay" and Star X actually is gay. And someone at work overhears me that is gay. And that person is offended by my comment. And I get fired.

What so many people deride as PC, most others just consider good taste and manners.

Yes b/c its just good manners:

-to call blacks african-american. Their great great great grandpa earned them the right to keep the 'african' part.
No one is putting a gun to your head but the fact is, some people dont like to be refered to by their skin color. I suppose you can also go around calling Asians yellows, Indians Browns and Native Americans Reds all you want but that doesnt mean people wont be offended. Since when did making a small gesture to not offend a group become such a hated thing?

It's not that big of an effort and for the most part it's reserved to more formal situations. No one is making you spell woman "womyn" or anything like that. I guess you would want us to go back to calling african-americans negros, since afterall, that's just another term for black and it's only the PC liberal-nazis that made it bad

Why don't you write to the NAACP and blast them for using "colored" in their name?

Or maybe write to BET and tell them that BLACK entertainment television is offensive?

It is not a tough situation at all. Kids should be told that they are not as good at some things so that they will focus on what they are good at. It makes zero sense telling Johnny Fatwad that he can be track star when he really has a better chance at being happier doing something else that he is better at. Life is a competition. The quicker kids learn that the less shocked they will be when they hit the real world (or heck, highschool). Further, parents will be happier and can be legitimately proud because their kids will truly excel at something, as opposed to having to lie to their kids to keep their ego's up. I'm not saying to crush a kids ego the first time he tries something. But once it becomes apparant that the kid has no talent for something, they should be focused into something they have a talent for. Many European schools are set up this way. once kids hit 8th grade they take a test that determines whether they will go on to college or not etc...

Political Correctness is a farce. All it is doing is taking words describing 'undesired' traits and making them unusable without offending. Then, it replaces these words with 'more desirable' descriptions of undesired traits. Then, the new replacements themselves become offensive forcing language to change.

"Retarded" became offensive so now it's "mentally challenged." Though, "mentally challenged" is starting to be regarded as offensive. The only reason "retarded" ever became offensive is because it was used in an offensive manner since it is inherently an UNDESIRABLE trait. It's a sad day when only desirable terms are forced for describing all desirable and undesirable traits that exist.

So.. my biggest trend that I hate is being forced to make sure I don't use 'old terms' that are now deemed offensive to have everyday conversation. In other words, I hate to see our language just fall apart.

..yep. for instance "undocumented aliens" rather then calling them what they really are i.e. illegal aliens. Calling law breakers "undocumented" is like calling meth dealers "undocumented pharmacists".
