I am for:

Smaller government (state and federal)
Fiscal responsibility
Cutting social programs
Paying down the debt
Abortion: Mind your own damn business
Guns: Mind your own damn business
Drugs: Mind your own damn business
Seatbelts: Mind your own damn business

Edit:
Oversight to prevent business from polluting, and from monopolies/etc...
Flat tax after a certain income
Getting rid of most tax deductions including home interest and charity
Gay Marriage: Mind your own damn business
Abolishing SS

Etc... Is there a good political party for me?

Neither D or R for sure. Maybe "Lieberman for Connecticut" party? ;)

I'm also for a flat proportional tax on income (above a certain amount). Getting rid of deductions for things like home interest, etc.

I'm going to limit my discussion to R vs D because, realistically, at this point no other party has much chance.

[*]Smaller government: Can be R or D depending on what part of government you want smaller.
[*]Fiscal responsibility: You want a mixture where multiple parties fight. Having one party in control of congress and the other party in control of the presidency is your best bet. You second best bet is D.
[*]Cutting social programs: R.
[*]Paying down the debt: D.
[*]Abortion: Mind your own damn business. D
[*]Guns: Mind your own damn business. Either R or D.
[*]Drugs: Mind your own damn business. D.
[*]Seatbelts: Mind your own damn business. D.

Sounds like you have a mixture of both parties. Thus you are the ideal person to vote for candidates on both sides. Whomever is the closest match to you should win your vote. You can be one of the few enlightened people who vote on issues rather than on the R or D next to the name.

You are a libertarian. But in order to survive long enough for the libertarian party to ever become viable, you will have to support the Dems.

Ideally I'd like both federal and state governments smaller. I know that classical conservatives were for a weaker federal government, but it isnt like that anymore. Both major parties seem to want bigger governments everywhere. I think my best bet might be to start my own party?

Then Libertarian isn't a perfect fit for you, but it's the closest there is until I form my own.

Libertarians want no federal taxes, and want businesses allowed to rape and pillage at will without consequences.

You and I appear basically equal in our political desires (as are many of my friends). We've serious contemplated creating a party (working title: The Rationalist Party), but the big issue is that we'd be competing with the Libertarians. In order for third parties to have a chance there needs to be support for the best chance candidate, and right now that's Libertarians. So we're torn between throwing in with the Lib's for now and splitting off later, or forming ours and hoping we end up with more support than Lib's. Tough call.

Yeah, I was gonna comment on that but you beat me to it. Democratic party is the bane of the 2nd Amendment. If they'd get realistic on that issue they'd pull some support away from the Republicans without having to court the evan fundies.

Republican party today is not a conservative bunch, except for morality issues. Everything else has gone left, hence the term neo-con.

Hey if you decide to start one up let me know! I like the name too. I think if most Americans were able to see a political party with a clearcut rational stance on the issues, they would get a lot of support. I just looked up the American Patriot Party, and they look pretty good as far as obeying the original intent of the constitution and limiting the rights of the government, but I haven't done enough reading up on them to know for sure.

There are others on that list that are suspect. Paying down the debt? Yeah dems talk about that because republicans are in power. I dont see us paying anything down if Dems get into office. It is a nice wedge issue to bash Bush over, that is it.

The name would have to change; it has negative connotations with anyone who knows Ayn Rand literature. Besides, there are already a few parties with that name.

I wouldn't seriously consider forming the party until I finish my poli-sci research. There's a lot I have yet to work out.

Considering you just used an irrational description of libertarians in in your response, the Rationalist Party is getting off to a bad start.

Not entirely true. If you look at spending (at least since Reagan) you'll find spending and debt increasing under Rep's far more than under Dem's. Balance was attained only under Dem leadership in recent history.

Not that I believe that was a party thing, nor would I trust the Dem's to really shrink the government. I think right now both parties will increase spending and government size.

Aside from possibly the two parts I bolded the Libertarian party would be your best choice.

What you will find is spending is pretty constant increase but Republicans do not fund their increases while the democrats do. That to me isnt fiscally responsible, it is just covering your ass.

And I agree, neither party now is interested in reducing the growth of this monster we call the federal govt.

Obviously I was exagerating. It's hardly concealed that the LP is strongly supportive of business/corporate rights. There have been many statements issued about the need for governments to cease all interference in business matters. It is only through government pressures that businesses were brought in line and the days of the 'robber barons' ended.

well you either have to choose economic freedom or social freedom. i for one value my economic freedoms far greater than my social freedoms so i vote republican. libertarians should vote republican and vie to kill the democratic party. that way it'll be republican vs libertarian and all you have to do is fight over social freedoms because you can be friends on economic freedoms.

Republicans no longer stand for economic liberty.

Only Congress has authority to tax and spend (Check the Constitution). When was the last time a Democratically-controlled Congress balanced the budget? (And I am in no way suggesting the GOP is any better; they just waste money on other things.)
