I'm dealing with a significant commute again. Wondering if anyone's listening to anything great that they want to share.

Cato daily podcast. Libertarian politics. Well made, and succinct. Regardless of your political leanings, worth a listen, unless you like partisan circlejerking. In that case MSNBC and Fox probably has something.

I forgot a new "classic" for fans of a TV show: The West Wing Weekly.

How does that work? That show hasn’t been on for years. Is it like a “What would have President Bartlett done in this situation?” kind of show?

Although I am curious what the Aaron Sorkin inspired dream scenario of Bartlett beating Trump in a general election would have looked like.

It's an ep-by-ep rewatch of the show with a massive fan (Hrishikesh Hirway of Song Exploder) and a star of the show (Josh Malina). They have incredible guests, including Sorkin a couple times, and generally just discuss how the show holds up or doesn't and how much or how little things have changed.

If you enjoyed the show at the time, it is a nice way to get a lot more out of it.

After trying a bunch of podcasts, there's very few that I could stick with. Hardcore history is good but its tough to have the right situation to really dive into, and some of the topics I don't really care enough to want to listen to hours worth about it (even though I'd probably find it compelling). A lot of the cutesy anecdote ones suffer from being mostly fluff. The ones that try to be more serious in that respect tend to be flawed (Radiolab, which perhaps is still due to my limited sample size of their stuff). Too many of the ones that are supposed to delve into topics (like science) do so pretty superficially so I end up already knowing the information it contained or it not providing enough hooks to get me interested enough to research more about it on my own, if not outright knowing not any more about the topic than before I listened to it because they tell you stuff but it didn't really inform or maybe clarify things (sometimes where they somehow simultaneously make it both more and less complex than it needs to be).

And that's if there isn't audio issues or something along those lines. Like on Star Talk their voices are just grating and makes it unlistenable to me. And other podcasts try to do things to make them seem more profound (extended silences, weird ill-fitting music segments that is really just an extended silence but trying to not make it not literally be that so that you don't have to keep checking if the app crashed or something). Weird ways of speaking (I heard people rave about Lore, but the way the guy talks makes me lose interest in the subject he's covering because its like this weird monotone). And I've never really been into the ones that are basically just people getting together to laugh incessantly over every stupid thing without providing much (I really don't get the ones where its just an endless parade of guests but the interviews are all shit because the people are either intentionally trying to stir shit, or not stir shit so we either get stuff that is probably mostly bullshit, or modern sports press conferences where they talk a lot but don't actually say a damned thing). Oh and ones that either overly condense themselves, or drag the topic well beyond what it was really worth (S-Town comes to mind, its like he wanted us to really feel what it was like having those long phone conversations with the guy, only it was him paraphrasing what the other guy said; I feel like that should've been like half as long as it ended up being because of the way it was edited together and the fact that it ultimately ended up being so much nonsense).

It seems like a lot of podcasts start out with something to say but devolve into cult of personality of the presenters (kinda reminds me of Barbara Walters interviews where its like, they still have what made them compelling but they've almost become rote and so its not getting the same off the cuff aspect that made it compelling earlier on; their guests come prepared to act a certain way instead of the more organic way things had operated before), while others start out with little focus and then tighten up as they kinda find their voice but lose the fun chaos as they kinda built towards that (and then that seems sadly to be often followed by devolving into cult of personality of the presenters).

Oh, the only two I've stuck with are Last Podcast on the Left, and My Favorite Murder. I think its because the topics are heavy but the hosts tend not to be, so they don't have to dress things up to make it interesting, but also keep things light enough that you can listen casually and not end up dwelling on it the whole day. I had to take a break from the latter though when they were going through their "OMG, we're so popular!" phase. LPotL, has transformed in that they're much more in depth and do a lot more research (good things on many of the topics; some of their earlier ones feel way to limited now), although they're not quite as fun as they were earlier on because of it. I think I'm done doing the mini-episodes they started doing not long ago, as those seem like its going to mostly be Ben and Henry ranting about the same shit while occasionally talking about some recent happening. I also got worried there a bit when they seemed to start really believing some of the shit (like the magic stuff, which then fed them giving too much weight to it when they delved into Crowley and L Ron Hubbard; and their adulation of Bowie clouded them to outright ignore a lot of not so admirable aspects of him and his life).

I guess the difference is that libertarians prefer their jerks alone with a "tactical" fleshlight (to go with their "tactical" knives/flashlights/watches/sunglasses/shovels/pen/rape-dungeons-I-mean-bunkers)?

I did get a chuckle out of you acting like Cato doesn't circle-jerk with the best of them. Next up you'll claim the Koch Brothers are really super against money in politics because they say they are.

You really are a stupid cµnt. Instead of running your mouth, going off what you "think"(oxymoron of the fuckin' century!), listen to it, read, and judge on its merits. Or go suck P&N cock. I don't give a shit either way. Doesn't affect my life a bit.

You Are Not So Smart is one I typically hit in bunches after I've built up a few.

Also, Hello From the Magic Tavern has just the right amount of talk about buttholes in a magical land.

I tried the Cato-cast and it wasn't for me. I'd rather just listen to the Daily for news of the day.
