Went to Sportmart yesterday looking for a pair of 25 lb. weight plates since the set I bought used only has 2..and I need two more to be able to use dumbbells with..and found that they were about .70/lb no matter what the weight. Are there places that sell them cheaper?

.25 per lb is about the best usually, got to get it locally or you'll need to order the free warming KY with the order, ;).

Play it again and pawn/thrift stores are great sources.

Also sears will have clearances on the 'olympic' sets from time to time. I saw a 'nice' home gym retailing at $1500 and worth it at $200 clearance. My original bench and weights I got from a foot locker? at 75% off and sold it 3 years later for 2x the price.

I don't know what they cost, but my roommate shops at WalMart and Kmart for weights...

Do all plates generally fit all bars? I have a weider set with like they huge twist on nuts that secure the plates.

Honestly, hit up garage sales. Plates are plates as long as they are the right size. Other than that, have fun piecing out the "perfect" weight set, as its almost smarter to buy another bar/200 lb. plate set for like $89 instead of paying $25 for a pair of 25's. Inevitably you will need some more 45's, or a couple more 2's or whatever.

I'll second the Sears suggestion. They have some nice plates there - handles/rubberized/ect for very reasonable rates. I've seen them for as low as $.40 a pound.

From what I've seen "olympic" weight sets typically are a universal size. Bars and plates are interchangeable.

Dicks Sporting Goods and Sports Authority should sell them for .50 a Lb. , I've seen them on sale for .40

Yeah, I have a set of the standard I believe, cheap weider iron ones from sears.

How much does a standard barbell weigh? I know olympic weigh 45lbs.

The standard being the weights with the small inner hole, and the olympic being those with a large inner hole.

Outside of the some weights are designed to interlock, etc....but in general it's all based on the hole. Much like life ;)

My small barbell weighs 10 lb, the dumbbells weigh 2 each.

Hmm, went to Sears today, $23.99 for 25 lb plate..that's just about $1 a lb. Then tried Big 5, $19 for 25 lb. Gah, too expensive =/

i picked up about 300 pounds for 90 bucks at dick's sporting goods. there were two very crowded registers with families all around. when i got in line i started talking real loud like about wanting to buy a trampoline but not wanting the next door neighbors to have sex on it. my cashier's face turned beat red and the dude only scanned in one of each plate size, forgetting to go back and add in the multipliers.

I just bought the Weider C840 (awesome system) for $275, it didn't come with any weights so I bout two 25lb plates at $17.95 each. I'll be picking up the 180lb set for $150 this weekend. These are nice because they're steel and hav nice very holdable handles.
