Well... (forgot about the thread)
The reason why I think books aren't as helpful as people believe is because..
The directions the books head in, and what they decide to cover, is 99% dictated by the internet.
People like
sevenflow, and
Phong aren't written on black and white pages, yet they dictate the style of "amazing" design. (that phong site is some of the first tutorials I ever did.. and that site is also over a year and a half old :Q)
The books can teach you the basics.. but what they can't teach you, is how to make something nobody has ever seen.

I doubt Phuz has ever dealt with line screens, and he probably doesn't know what a "rich black" is. There's more to graphics than what people normally teach themselves, and there's very few online tutorials in these things. >>
Wouldn't that stuff pertain to print media more than design? Sure, I don't know about those types of things but I'm still in high school.. I'll wait for my post secondary education to teach me those.. dry...boring.. things.
Kelvrick, I wish I could do that. Chapters is our B&N equivalent (i think).. and they'd throw me out

So, is this a challenge? Are you saying I don't know my photoshop? Not to say anything about Phuz's work, but I could do any of that on his site. Granted, I'm not professional and can't do some of the graphics as quick as he can, but I can do them just fine. >>
Yeah, thats a challenege. Quick? no.. that portfolio took months. Granted, I wasn't working on it consistantly.. maybe 4-5 days a month, but all in all, I'd say the creation time was over 40 hours.
The commercial site.. a few hours.
