The answer to your question will very much depend on what kind of cell phone you already have and who's your provider.

I can tell you how my connection work, and maybe that will help you out.

I'm using Verizon Wireless with Motorola v60c phone. I had to purchase Motorola Data Connectivity Kit ( $30 ), which included USB Cable and phone drivers. Once drivers are installed, I simply connect my phone to the USB port via cable mentioned above and my cell phone acts as it would be an external modem. I use dial-up networking to dial my ISP, which gets me online within seconds. Its not the fastest connection in the world, but it works pretty well to check or send an email or get latest news and stocks.

I hope this helps and good luck!

I have seen a phone use a serial port to connect and I have heard of people using the infared port on their phone and laptop to connect. The oldest method involves getting a celluar capable PCMCIA modem card and a dongle to interface between the modem and your particular cell phone.
