what parts do I need?

I'm thinking of building a motherboard but not sure what parts are needed. If you guys could give me a list of parts, I can take the list down to my local Radio Shack and hopefully they'll have it.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

wow. that's awesome.

you want to build a mobo?
hmm.

what sort of background do you have? set of skills and stuff?
tools?

don't let people discourage you... for attempting something that they can't do.

i'm sure if you set your mind on this and work hard after it, you'll find its reward on the way.

🙂

happy holidays.

I don't have any computer skills yet, but I want to build a motherboard that can take 12 cpu's, because my friend has a dozen 200mhz computers his company is throwing out and I would like to put them on a motherboard and have lots of power.

Huh?

by the way, how do you get it so I don't have to type in my name and password everytime I reply...its kind of aggravating.

A dozen cpu's on one motherboard ... cool. Not sure if Intel has done that. Probably Cray and the like have though.

Okay, here is what you are going to need:
A clean room.
At least a 6 layer PCB (actually probably more).
Lots of silicon substrate.
Lots of copper wiring (very small gauge).
Some hard plastics.
The ability to program microcode (find that at your local radio shack).
And lots more that I have no idea about.

Or how about you give up this lame joke. If you are serious, just make a Beowulf cluster out of it.

4 or 5 circuity classes, some silicon wafer boards, a soldering iron, some capaciters, some resistors, and a prayer is all you will need...

seriously though, you'd be better off having them cluster then try to create a motherboard from scratch...I'm not entirely sure if the pentium pro's could even do anything besides a dual configuration as well....

just get you 6 dual motherboards and set them up with a beowulf cluster

and set it to remember your log on...

and btw welcome to ATOT

ROFL LOOL PIMP LOLHAHAHA

You got a solid 10 seconds of shaking out of me on that one.

Pentium Pro will do 12 way processing. Not that this guy has a prayer of it, but the CPU itself is capable.

Damn, I misread it. I thought he was going to build a comp. I was thinking cpu, mobo, ram, vid card, sound card, hd, cd-drive, case, ps.

Now though, I'm just shaking my head. Build a motherboard? It'll turn out worse then when I decided to waste a bunch of money and try to build myself my own laptop.

I'm thinking of building a motherboard

Guess what? I'm thinking of making a Palomino chip in my garage (if I had a garage 🙂 )

Anyway, if you're building your own mobo, will you also be making the chipset from scratch silicon? And the capacitors? Like the other said, it's virtually impossible unless you've had experience at MSI or something, but even then, buillding a 12-way mobo? Highly not possible.

You will need a green PCB (like 8 layer), lotsa traces and stuff, some capacitors, 12 socket 5's, some dimm slots for 1st generation SDRAM, some PCI slots, a chipset, the IDE plug thingy, etc. This is not something that even one who's worked at MSI would attempt. I don't recommend pursuing this course.

Bwahahhahahaha Cutter you are teh funnay 🙂

I read in guiness records that at an Intel lab they connected something like 1200 or 12,000 Pentium Pro 200MHz procs.

Hey, I did that once. Wire wrapped an entire computer. Of course it was only an Motorola 6802 and the storage was cassette tape and the output was a TV but it worked. It even looked nice with the color coded wires and the Lexan base and cover.

Now, I wouldn't even attempt it with a current processor.

A brain and some superglue. That way you can put superglue on your hand, so when you go "oh sh*t this is harder than I thought" your hand will stick to your head so you'll actually look like a idiot. 😀

If I could get a line on 42,000,000 transistors I figure I could build one to rival one of them there Intel P4's. I gots me a whole bunch of wire left over from run'in speakers out to my garage. I figures I can power it with that car I got up on blocks.
