what partitions does Win98 need?

ok i totaly f***ed up big time, i have 2 hard drives but 1 computer. i accidently had Linux format my Win98 hard drive and take all the partitions off it...... now the boot disk that came with the emachines will not work because it's not smart enough to figure out that it needs a windows partition before it can actually work! i can make partitions very easily with the Mandrake 8.0 disk1 because it has the option of putting FAT 16 or FAT 32 partitions on it..... i tried having the whole hard drive just be 1 huge FAT32 partition but it said i can't do that. what partitions do i need so that i can restore the hard drive with Win98? this is my dad's hard drive and he's gonna totaly freak out when he finds out that his hard drive is f***ed (it started to intall before i realized i had the wrong hard drive plugged in) so i clicked cancel and when it boots up it looks like this:
checking for boot CD........none
checking for boot floppy.......none
#%$&Q(*&$(*_#@*$)&@#%

i may be able to put off fixing it for a day by acting even dumber and saying "well wtf is that s***?" then act like i have no idea why it's f***ed.
plz help me 🙁

All that you should need is a primary logical partition (I think). Can you remember if there were any other partitions on the computer before you formatted the Hard Drive? I don't think the boot disk will work as there is no Operating system to boot up. If you only perfrormed a quick format then try a program called Drive Rescue, no guarantees, but it can recover lost or deleted files. Search Google for it.

Good Luck

it's not about lost files or whatever, it's about having absolutely no partitions at all. this thing can't have ANY information on it because there are no partitions. what is the EXACT name of EVERY partition a Win98 computer should have? i have like 7 hours left...

You need a Windows rescue disk with fdisk on it.
There is no absolute requirement for the number of partitions in Windows other than at least one and it should be a primary partition. After fdisking the drive and setting up a partition you need to set it as "active" and format it.

Yeah there are no requirements for Win98 to install... as long as you hvae a partition you shoudl be fine.

Fdisk, delete all partitions, create a new one. Format C:\ Install Windows off the CD or using a boot disk then CD.

i don't have a floppy with fdisk on it, i only have the recovery CD that came with it. seriously what partitions do i need? i set 1 gigantic FAT32 partition and it said i can't do that. wtf do i do? i'm using Disk Druid (linux program) to put the FAT partition on.

Chooco, you don not need any partitions other then the primary DOS partition, which you can create using FDISK. Just put a primary DOS partition on the Hard Drive and you're set to install Windows 98.

Chris

I think I see the problem.
FAT16 is limited to 2G partitions. Disk Druid can read FAT32 partitions but may not be able to write them. You need to get a hold of a Windows setup disk with Windows FDISK and Format on it. If you know anyone running 98 they can make one for you in about a minute or try Bootdisk.com.
