What paint do I need?

We're considering painting the varnished wooden borders around our doors in the house. Most of the side skirting is also varnished wood and looks pretty old now. All of this varnished wood not only looks old, but we want to paint it in a plain, mahogany colour. It should look glossy when fisnished, and the wood underneath - which is varnished and is pine coloured - should not show up at all.

We want a deep glossy mahogany finish to the old pine-coloured varnished wood, and need to know what sort of paint/stains/etc to use. We would prefer it to be a quick-ish job, but a neat, glossy mahogany colour.

take steel wool or sandpaper and take the gloss off the existing finish. Use a mahogany color gel stain and apply it over the existing. Keep in mind this will not look like plain wood with a mahogany stain, but short of replacing the wood, it's all you can do.

paint != stain.

Does the stain apply this glossy effect to it or will I need to polish/varnish it afterwards? Also, will the stain allow some of the wood underneath to show (I would prefer perfect mahogany only and none of th previous wood colour showing)?

I would imagine with the old stain and new stain on it you won't see much wood grain. You will need to use a polyutherane to getthe shiny look. Put on one coat, sand with a very find sandpaper, then reapply. DO this untill you get a finish/feel that you like.
