Hello ,

I'm looking into upgrading my old system to P3 , but I also need a new MB , so what the best pick of the cpu's right now ? should I take 800 mhz , I saw it together with MB for $310 ;) ... or what else should I look into ? ... and where I could get good/cheap cpu + mb together ?

p.s. and all the same questions from overclocking point of view :)

Thank you,
bye.

If you have PC133 RAM you should get a 700e with an Asus CUSL2 mobo. Good combo for overclocking.

I agree with Maximus22. You might consider the Asus P3v4x as it's quite a bit cheaper. I rate the board very much. IMO, make sure you choose ASUS.

The ASUS P3V4X is currently the best bang for the buck as far as P3 motherboards go. The CUSL2 is a nice board, but its price is not. Add a P3/700E cB0 with some good PC133 RAM and you should be golden. Great overclocking combo.

I agree with everyone. I have that board with a p3 650e and use 1 stick of 256meg 133mhz ecc ram and 1 stick of 256meg 100mhz ecc ram and have not problems.

I thought of buying P-3-800 ... but P3V4X only supports up to 733 .. than I should get CUSL2 , or any other ?

MSI 815E Pro is better than Asus CUSL2(quite a lot cheaper too).

Asus P3V4X is the best VIA 133A board if price is a concern.

Pair them with a 700E and that would be the best value combo.

For value, I sure am happy with my MSI-6309, which can be picked up for $323 with a PIII 750 from multiwave. The motherboard alone can be had for $87 plus shipping and handles FC-PGA from the Celerons up through the PIII 933, I believe.

Can run my 700e at just over a ghz. on my P3V4X but anything over 142 fsb craps out my usb port. So I'll just have to suffer with 994;)

I have the CUSL2. Very nice board. Runs w/ P3-700 cB0 at 938 (1.8v) + 256 PC133.

Did a quick check at Pricewatch. The CUSL2 is $136, and the MSI 815e Pro is $134. I wouldn't call that 'quite a lot cheaper'. :)

Search for MicroStar 815E Pro or MicroStar MS-6337, the lowest price is $125, what is that? A 10% difference, which is quite a difference.

<<P3V4X is slower and less stable than CUSL2>>

Slower, yes, slightly. Less stable? No. Actually I've heard more problems with the CUCL2 than with P3V4X.

Ain't by much! I have been very satisfied with my P3V4X. Actually have 2 of them... both rock solid!

With the P3V4X you can even run the RAM at FSB - PCI, so if you crank up to 133Mhz FSB, you can knock off 33Mhz for the RAM, it hurts performance a bit, but if your ram won't rum stable at 133 then it's good.

I believe the i815 (CUSL2) can do that to...The CUSL2 has slightly better performance I think, but I'd take the CUV4X or P3V4X, they are much cheaper and perform nearly the same, and have more ram slots (CU indicates Socket370, P3 indicated Slot1, other than that the boards are pretty much identical).

I'd vote for an Asus CU/P3V4X and a Coppermine 700 I think.
