What outputs/inputs are essential on a TV and DVD player?

I don't really know anything about TV technology and I am going to buy a TV and DVD player soon. I am looking at around 30" non HD, probably sony or JVC. I just don't know what connections it should have. I want to play XBOX on it, if that matters,

I guess so, I don't have the XBOX yet either, Planning on buying it all at once: TV, DVD, XBOX, surround sound.
I have heard people talk about component video, is that essential for a great picture?
