What OS should I use?

Ok, I have a bit of a problem...

Right now I have a dual bootup with WinMe/Win2k (when i re-format I will replace WinMe with Win98SE) and I wanna move over to a 30gig HD my bro gave me, instead of the 15 gig I use now (I have a second HD, but I use that only for MP3's and the sort)

Anyways, I don't know if I should re-install win2k. I don't do anything major on it...just plain stuff...like maybe work with Photoshop, scan stuff, talk on AIM, email, etc. So nothing drastic

The things that I love about Win2k is when you press "Ctrl+Alt+Del" and then enter, it password-protects your computer. Also, if IE crashes, win2k will in a sense "re-build" itself so that you don't have to restart your computer

HOWEVER, right now it is taking a LONG time to start the comp. I dunno...maybe 3-4 min or whatever by the time that all the startup progz open up and everything (startup I have ZoneAlarm and Evidence Eliminator)

So i'm wondering...should I just install Win98, or should I do the dual bootup again, despite the startup time?

Also, does anyone have a solution for that password thingy, so that I would have a similar feature in Win98?

Also, I like the fact that under Win2k someone can't just press Esc and get into the comp. Does anyone have any GOOD security appz that they'd recommend?

Anyway, why don't you use Win2k by itself? It does take a while to boot up on some machines, but depending on your system, you'll rarely have to restart it. You should be able to do everything in Windows 2000 that you can do in Windows 98 (Unlike linux..) and it's twice as stable.

how you could use Win98 (or even worse WinME) after having experienced Win2k is amazing to me. When I upgraded to Win2k a year and a half ago I never looked back.

I need Win98 cuz of some progz that run under NORMAL Dos and won't run under win2k (viva cr*cks!! lol)

so yeah.

I considered Win98 just cuz of the bootup time. Oh well

Guess I'll stay with the dual bootup and keep Win2k. hehe

maybe your 15 gig hard drive is slow (i.e 5400RPM or worse). If the 30gig one you are going to recieve is 7200RPM you will notice a huge difference.

I doubt that that will make much of a difference. I'm running Win2k from a 5200 rpm HD as well and the boot time is nearly one minute.

Elledan the HD does make a massive difference, don't deny that. If you boot in one minute with a low-RPM drive, other factors are helping there. I went from 3800, 4200 and 5400 rpm drives to my current 7200rpm drive, and the difference is amazing. Of course memory is extremely important too.

If its taking that long to boot it seems like its trying to find and connect to a network that isn't there. Check your network settings and remove everything you don't need.

Install Win98SE - then install a few programs and run it for three or four days. If it's stable enough for you, then stay with it. If not, then dual with Win2000...

Win2000 is fine, but it's not the most amazing OS that everyone says it is.

i will never use win 98 again. long live windows 2000. if something you use doesn't work in windows 2000, then don't use it. I did that. after i went to win2k, i stayed, even though there were a couple of games that didn't work, etc.

oh yea, and windows 2000 IS everything that we claim it to be.

use Win2k Alone.

Any app which requires the true DOS to run, is unworthy of running. It is crap.

Most cracks nowadays are GUI based anyway.

i triple boot with win2k, winme, and mandrake. (i'm trying to learn linux.) i use 2k for everything, then under the RARE circumstance something doesn't run under 2k i boot me which takes about 10 seconds and run it under that. funny, when i installed 98/me gave me the most trouble.

Go pay the 10 bucks and try out Windows XP RC1... You will love it. It is everything Win2k is and much more. Stability is excellent. I haven't had a single crash yet...
