What OS should I use if it is only for games?

Look, I've been wondering around and find out that many of you guys are using Win2K. And that really surprised me, 'cause I thought that Win2K was designed only for network kind of application, like SQL Server and stuff. But actually many of you use it as a game platform.
I've been using Win98SE for a long time now. I bought the WinME but it looked really unstable on my iWill KK266-R / Duron 850. So I jumped back to 98SE. The point is that it is not that stable either.
So I'm thinking on give 2k a shot. But as I use my computer for games most of the time i'm not that sure about this change.
Should I use Win98, Win98Se, WinME or Win2k?
And else, should I install the professional or the adv. server?

My system config today is:

iWill KK266-R (0515 BIOS Update)
(not using RAID yet, not enought money)
Via 4in1 4.31 drivers + 3.11 IDE BusMaster
Duron 850 (no OC)
128Mb PC-100
Creative Anihilator 2 MX 32Mb
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Creative PC-DVD 6x Dxr3
Realtek 8139B based ethernet card
20Gb Quantum lct20 HDD

Any info about this issue will make this Brazilian friend of your very happy.🙂

I just switched over to 2k and it's nice. I have been able to tweak it and if anything it's faster than my Win98SE that I used to run. I don't run games but I have not had any problems with ACDSEE, Nero, Disc Juggler, Photoshop 5.5, Divix, MS Office 97 - I like it better than 2K, Winamp, Winzip, Winrar.. In fact the only program I had a problem with was Real Player and it's becuase Realplayer is crap. There was some option you had to uncheck but after that is works perfect.

W2K is like a rock. I am sold on it. Sorry I can't comment on games but do a seach here and read up. There are a lot of people who swear once you tweak 2K it's just as fast in games.

I am running Pro but I also have Advanced Server. I have no idea what I would use Advanced Server for so I can't help you there.

best bet stay with win98se, if you really want to try win2k i would partition your harddrive and do a dual boot system. partition magic will do this for you GREAT PROGRAM!!!

Thank you guys... I'll try the dual boot and i'm already looking for some tweakers for win2k. I think I'll try win2k pro first.
If every thing goes OK i'll remove win98se from my HD.
If any of you happened to come to Brazil, let me know.

I used to use 98SE and I switched over to 2K about 6 months ago. I have had 1 crash since, and that was while testing an OC (Duron700@945, it was the memory). I run games almost exclusively and I have found 2 that didn't work, Battlezone II and NFS4-High Stakes. All hardware was recognized pretty much right off the bat once I got the 4in1's installed (You may not need to worry about this). There were no new drivers available for my SBLive until about 1.5 months ago (But there are now, and Counter-Strike works flawlessly with them). I really can' think of anything major at all. I do have 256MB RAM though. I had only 96 originally, and let me tell you, 128 is THE MINIMUM you will need for decent performance. It is pretty good with 256.

One more thing, When running 98SE and testing OC's, it used to crash when the CPU was running too fast, now it just boots me to the desktop while running a game. I turn the OC down a hare, and it is now perfectly stable. Also, I am able to OC farther than with 98SE because it is more fault tolerant. It allows the CPU to make a mistake without crashing, whereas 98 will not. My recommendation goes for 2k, PM me if you have anymore Q's

stick with 2k, youll love us in about 6 months and point and laugh at all who have to format and get rid of 98se.

although, 98se is 10x than ME

Thank you... I' try first with Pro, if it works fine maybe i'll buy myself a copy.
I'll never buy a MS OS before I'd tested it. Last time I did I spend R$300,00 , what is about US$ 140,00 , on WinME and I used it for 2 days. Now it is on my shelf waiting for some friend of mine to buy it from me.

Hope I can get every single FPS out of my DURON 850 (hope I can get a good OC on it) using Win2K Pro.
