What OS is the prefered choice for gamers these days??

Sorry to ask something that I am sure comes up a lot these days, but as I am having serious problems with a new machine my friend and I are building. We are using Windows 98, but may have to upgrade because we can't get rid of the ndis. protection fault and stack errors during boot up.
Gaming is an important issue here so we need something that will run with most of the main titles out there. Any suggestions?

I'd highly recommend Windows XP. It's far more stable than 98, and as long as you have more than 128Mb of ram, it runs very well.

I'd give Windows ME at try.. 2k seemed a bit of a bear to use just for a windows desktop..... And XP just gives me a headache. But since I am Linux user
don't give what I say a lot of weight

I'd try to work out the problems you're having with 98 before I tried Windows ME. In fact I wouldn't try me at all.

I'm using Win2K Pro, I found that Rainbow 6, albiet an older version, will not run on 2k. At least I haven't found a way, I haven't looked too hard though. I have rack mounted hard drives and being lazy, got a cheap HD and installed 98se on it.

Otherwise everything else runs great, no complaints.

Personally, I'd stay far away from WinMe.
