I want a great OS that will support all games and has easy networking capability. I heard that 2k was good, but i also heard 2k did crap on games. I was wondering if ME is any good? I heard from my one friend who always uses it that it is great. I was just wondering please get back to me soon. Thanks

When 2k is crap for old dos and some Win 95 games but for newer games like CS, StarCraft and Diablo 2, IWD, BG-2, Q3, MOH, UT, etc.... it's runs good.

W2k if you don't run any old DOS or Win 95 games and Win 98 SE if you like play some old DOS games or Win 95 games. ME is okay but it is to bloated and XP is bloated and needs more time in the oven to mature but that's my opinion and others may feel different about whats the best MS OS for games. So the only thing you can do is to try it out for yourself.

I think 98 or possibly ME might do that. Tweaking 98 is no fun, I just dont like the idea of rebooting with every little change. I would suggest that you pick your games and see if they will run on w2k. I agree with NorthenLove, I would pick w2k (unless you absolutely must have a game that is not supported under it).

best Windows OS right now: Windows 2000 Professional

but if you need old dos support you may want to go with Windows 98 SE or do a dual boot.

Sorry, i would have responded sooner, but i spewed my drink all over my monitor when I saw that someone was even mildly hinting that ME was a good OS. STAY AWAY FROM IT at all costs. It is the biggest piece of trash ever (no, I am not some M$ basher, but EVERY single time I/my friends have used ME, it crahses all the time) If I were you, I would go with XP or 2K. The time you may spend getting your games working will be much less than the time spent rebooting from illegal ops.

There are a few security issues with XP (as it tends to be the target of viruses, etc), but as long as you're not picking fights with people, you should be ok. It has backwards compatibility options for the older games (but I don't know how well that works). I never got my ATI AIW Radeon working completely correctly under 2k (working drivers may be out by now...). 2k is good OS, but so is XP. Personally, I'd go with XP.

My friend in CA likes ME a lot, because it runs all his stuff. Wait, he's online - let me check:

Me: hey dude
He: wassup
Me: do you run XP now?
He: yeah
Me: do you like it more than ME?
He: yeah
He: I think so

He later mentioned that it did take some tweaking to get it all working, but he seems happy with it. Based upon what I've read, if you're not going to go with XP, then go with 2k. If you're not going to go with 2k, then go with 98SE. Until this round of posts I hadn't read of anyone recommending ME - glad it works for them though ;).

i actually have a friend who really likes ME. i consider him a pretty informed person when it comes to computers. he claims that if you do some tweaking your system will be really stable. then you can take advantage of the speed in ME without worrying about the stability.

Win2K is the best OS as far the MS stable is concerned - XP is too bloated while ME is CRAP !!

As far as gaming is concerned Win2K has pretty good support too - all new games are supported and as for the older ones you can download a small update and a lot of your popular, older games would work fine. Check out the Windows 2000 Compatibility Updates page for a complete list of these games and other relevant details.

ME manages (somehow) to both suck, and blow at the same time. It's bloated and slow.

98SE is nippy but unstable.

2K Is excellent given enough ram and all the updates (service packs, security rollups, device drivers etc)

XP is funky if a little slow, and probably the easiest to get going for a novice.

Linux is great if you love penguins and don't really want to do anything.
(ooh, I'm gonna get flamed for that one ;))

Do yourself a favor... NO Windows me...

If you have a decent amount of ram <256 go win 2k...

if you have more than that XP...

... Even if you have 256 ram you can Run XP, but it will want more than that.....

Good Luck

personally, i ran xp with 256, and am happy with it (especially given the increase in RAM price). Maybe I'm the only person who is, but at least you know there's one ;).

interesting thread:

Gotta chime in my 2 cents worth, since I recently spent mucho time unraveling the nightmare that is Windows Me. Short story - avoid Windows Millenium Edition (Me) as if it was the plague. Most unstable OS Microsoft ever released. Sure, some people don't have problems with it. And some people have had a reliable English car... (or Italian car).

If you play DOS games use Windows 98 SE. If you don't play DOS games, use Windows XP. Although DOS games may work just fine under XP, I don't know since I don't play any games like that.

I have both ME and XP Pro running on two different machines and there is no contest, XP Pro wins hands down.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones, my ME dosen't give me too much problems and XP Pro does not crash like ME.

Good luck.

ME has always given me trouble... I'd stay away from it.

I'd go with Win2k or possibly XP Pro. Those are pretty good. Doesn't Xp have a compatibility mode for older software?
