What OS is IBM using for their administration, etc.? Aren't they directly supporting Microsoft then?

Well actually the question isn't really well asked. I'm just curious what OS the normal IBM-Worker is using? Windows? If yes, then they would have to pay a crap-load for licenses to Microsoft, no? And they would directly support actually they're biggest contender, no?

Just some thoughts kinda weird worded 😉
 
A number of possibilities:

1. Windows. I doubt it, though, as the licensing costs would be astronomical and they'd be supporting their #1 competitor, not to mention the fact that every time some red-headed intern opens an e-mail virus (after being told not to a million times a day) their entire network would be DoS'ed.
2. OS/2. This is a possibility. I remember someone telling me that most employee boxes at IBM ran OS/2 at some point.
3. AIX. IBM's flavor of UNIX. A definite possibility.
4. Linux. IBM has begun to do a lot of stuff with Linux, I wouldn't be suprised to see it running on a lot of employee desktops.

I can't give you accurate info, however. Only an IBM employee could do that! 🙂

#1, that's what I meant, but OS/2? Are they still developing it further?

 
I'd imagine your average schmuck in support, sales, or customer service is going to be running Windows, probably NT or 2000. Your average engineer is going to run whatever it is he/she wants to run to get the job done. The specialized support departments are going to run whatever they support, probably with a secondary Windows machine.
 
My sister works for IBM so I'll ask her when she wakes up. She told me once that they're supposed to treat Microsoft as "the enemy". But I don't believe that the two giants are in as much competition as everyone thinks. Her thinkpad has win9x i think...

IBM uses a little bit of everything. I have a friend that works there as a systems admin, and he said that they use a mix of Windows NT, Windows 2000, OS/2, AIX, and Linux. Almost all of their desktop computers use Windows, however, with Lotus's office and mail software.
 
I guess the Average Joe IBM'er runs some sort of Windows. Servers are propably AIX and Linux. And I have heard from several sources that large part of the developers and R&D guys run Linux on their desktops.

There might still be OS/2 there somewhere too 🙂.
