What OS is best for this system? ..

Hey, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster.

First off let me apologize if this has been asked many times, but honestly, I really wouldn't take any advice unless it's from my own question, know what I mean? And please note I'm not very experienced in hardware issues, so please try to do the courtesy of making this so I can understand. 🙂

I'm looking to get setup with one of these..

AMD T-Bird 1.4 ghz, ASUS (something) mboard
512 mb RAM ..
60 gig HD, 7200 rpm, dont know brand, sorry.
Creative Soundblaster X-Gamer 5.1 sound card
GeForce 2 64 mb (not ultra), but will upgrade to GF 3 soon

I'm looking for this to be a hardcore gaming rig, and my only concern now is what OS is best.. I'm guessing its between 98 and 2k. I've been told that Windows 2k is mainly for networking/business type people like Windows NT was. I'm sure I can be proven wrong.

What is your best opinion, thanks ..

While Win2K is a very good gaming platform, it still has some compatibility problems every now and again. If all of your games are relatively new, most should be able to be played under Win2K, and you would be taking advantage of Win2K's stability.

If you have some older games, then it would probably be best to go with Win98SE. On a properly set up system, Win98SE can be very stable (or at least it has been for me) and you have the widest range of compatibility, as well as DOS Mode should you ever need it.

Go with Win98SE if you are into gaming as the most Vid card Drivers have much less performance under 2K for now
