What OS for Storage Computer?

I posted this in General Hardware, but my next question would be more appropriate here.

Basically, I'm building a computer for my network that will ONLY be used for storage. What OS should I be running? Win2K seems a bit bloated for this which is what I'm currently thinking of.

<< BeOS baby, i think this would be an excellent use for it. >>

And only a 40MB download! I'll see how it works. I hope it supports all the hardware that I'll be ordering. Their hardware compatibility hasn't been updated since March 27, 2000.:frown:

For Linux, which distro should I use? I don't want Mandrake or Redhat which has a LOT of extras. What's the most basic one that's also simple to use? Is it Debian, Slackware...? (Those are the ones that I've been hearing about when it comes to Linux.)

FreeBSD, one of the best operating systems EVER. BeOS would be interresting, it has a decent filesystem. OpenBSD would be my personal choice because of its security improvements. But FreeBSD would be my choice if security is less of a concern.

dude, you should go with linux or bsd. of course they will be rock solid if u can set it up. and plus you wont need expensive hardware since basic filesharing wont require a gui or other crap.

install slackware with no gui, update the kernel, newest samba and your good to go. perfect filesharing everytime.

free or openbsd would be good choice also, since most bsds ship with just the basics youll need.

Security will not be an issue since it'll only have files that I will share with only myself. 🙂 Hmmm... a HUGE download for FreeBSD but shouldn't be a problem. I like their site a LOT! Great documentations from what I've seen so far! Gonna give this a try as well. Thanks!

And the wonderful ports utility allows for easy, hassle free installations 🙂

The BSDs are known to have good documentation. Linux on the other hand always seems to be VERY behind on that issue...

I might end up dual booting my file server with all these options.🙂

Thanks for all the help! Finished downloading BeOS, currently downloading FreeBSD 4.3, and about to download Slackware 7.1. Too bad I won't be able to use them 'til I order and build my new system. I guess I'll dual boot for now on my everyday PC to get a little familiar with these new OS's. Thanks again!

Well, if he truly wants the easiest, then he can always just run a barbones Win95OSR2 and share the files 🙂

I keep an image of my Win95 storage machine (P 200mmx with 32M, 2 2gig hdd). It also runs Sygate for my DSL line. I made an image of the boot drive when it was fresh loaded. I keep the data on the 2nd drive. It runs great...If something goes wrong, I just reload the image and in 15 Min, viola, I am back in business, even if I had to replace the drive.

Win95 would be the simplest, but I wanna try the other new stuff out. Plus, I have no idea where my copy is.😛
