Greetings,
I just got a new P4 1.8Ghz PC to replace my P3 733Mhz PC. My PC is primarily used for checking email, browsing the web, and playing games. The games I normally play are mostly MMORPG games such as EQ, DAoC, AC2 and some old StarCraft, etc online games.

I currently still use Win98 justt because I never needed to upgrade and am probably still hearing the problems with Win2K when it first came out. I'm just wondering what OS you all prefer on a Gaming system whether it's Win98SE, Win2k, or WinXP.

Please respond with either just your choice or better yet, your reasons why too.

Thanks!

Well duh, other: Windows ME!

In all seriousness, the games you mentioned will work just fine on 2k or xp.

True enough, but you don't need those to play vids. Win98SE all the way for gaming.

Bah, I'll kick anyone's ass running 2k or xp. As a matter of fact, I don't even need windows to kick your butt at unreal tournament 2003, quake 3 or return to castle wolfenstein :p;)

I can understand not upgrading if you have 98se already and you don't think another MS operating system is worth your money, but not upgrading specifically for the reason of games is kinda, well, not smart. I go to LAN's, and almost no one runs 9.x, then again none of them paid for XP...

Win2k or WinXP are the better choice, although the number of Linux games is slowly (read: slowly) increasing.

Anyone using Win9x needs to realize a full 32-bit OS is a good thing.

Install Dungeon Keeper (The first one) on 2K and tell me if it runs......

I myself have a dual boot setup with 98 / Win 2K. I do everything in @k, and what wont run there I put on the 98 side. I think i have 3 games on the 98 side.......Of which at least o0ne is VERY old.

I run a dual boot system since I found that my games run faster in Win98. All those services that run in Win2k (right or wrong) might not be too good for running games.

Personally, I dont see what the big hate on 98 is. Its a darned good OS for the home user. Bit finicky on occasion, but it does do a decent job.

Ack, I would rather kill myself than go back to the clunky Win98 platform! I would stick with XP all the way, turn off some of the un-needed services and l drop the stupid Luna theme and she runs like a dream.

Well, as of right now it's a tie between XP and 2000 so I'm just bumping this to get some views from the morning crowd. Basically I have a PC running 98 SE right now. I also have copies of 2000 and XP from other systems and am just wondering what would be the ebst (or if it just really doesn't matter) to use on the PC that would be used 95% for games and the rest just for standard web browsing, email, etc.

THanks for all the input.

Ok, you guys got me there. I havn't had any games that don't work on 2k, however if I did, the 98 cd would be out in a flash.

I havn't had any speed differences between 98 and 2k, and you do realize that all those services can be shut off (saves memory, better security), don't you?

For gaming hmm I guess I prefer XP for gaming ,however Win98 is more compatible with older games so it really depends on the type and age of the games in question, but in general I prefer XP.

As long as I have programs and games that will not work in WinXP, I will have Win98SE as a dual boot.

[shudder]

Win98 has been (thankfully) no longer a part of my life since the release of Win2K (except for supporting other people's machines); I try to stay away from Windows as much as I can these days, though...the main reason it's still on my system is that WINE is a total b_tch to configure (but kudos to them for coming as far as they have on a difficult project).

Win2K is my favorite incarnation of Windows so far, and probably will be the last one I ever use because Microsoft is starting to really, REALLY get on my nerves with pricing and product activation; just remember, when you do switch to 'nix (and I hope you will), to give the developers a donation for their hard work.

So what are the main differences I need to take into account if I look at XP Home vs XP Pro? I've been told Home doesn't have as much "stuff" running in the background, but Pro gives me more flexibility to turn thigns on and off as I need them.
