"Bill Frist, majority leader of the Senate, and Jon Kyl are both credited with expediting the UIGEA's passage through the Senate."

They were puppets. What company/organization was pulling their strings?

Sort of an insight of how goofy American politics can get. Better port security, okay... funding for the Coast Guard, okay..Transportation Worker Identification Credential, er, okay I guess... how does internet gambling fit in this?

If the right people show up with the right amount of money, a politician will support legislation for anything.

I love online poker sites. People know the companies have accounts that can kibitz the whole table, but they still play with real money.

Here is a thought, perhaps the reason why it is not allowed is that internet gambling cannot be regulated very easily. The logistical nightmare that is such is painstaking. You can potentially have any Joe Schmo in a foreign country open up a server/gambling site for the purpose of potentially scamming funds out of the US. It is easy for getting into gambling online and so I think many people will potentially partake.

Thus in perhaps a few years, you will see some problems with the economy in that it is another outlet for the country's wealth (it rests within the people, no matter what you think), to be unbalanced with the imports and exports.

The other fact why this is not allowed is that there is no way to even tax those businesses or keep accountability of any wrongdoing. There are rules that are set up with businesses for a reason, both foreign and domestic, in hopes that the whole world economy (from our perspective) doesn't put us at a disadvantage. Cry free market all you want, but without any rules and regulations to play by, be prepared to be scammed out of house and home (and that is one of the many many reasons why it is in place.)

You really want this country to be even more messed up than it is right now? Think and have some foresight as to what will happen if internet gambling (in its not fully cover all bases form) to be realized? Eventually it will happen but until we can make sure ALL bases are covered to where the US as a whole won't be screwed, then it will stay the way it is.

I am not also discounting the local gambling businesses also not allowing it either, it is bad for their business. But to say that is the sole reason, I just can't accept that.

So can someone explain to me why Title VIII, also known as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, is included in this SAFE Port Act legislation? What does online gambling, and more specifically the transfer of funds from a financial institution to an Internet gambling site, have to do with the rest of what's laid out in the body of the act?

From what I can gather, nothing. It looks as if it was slipped in at the 11th hour and passed by virtue of having it be intentionally obscured by system.

I think people should be able to spend their money wherever however, as long as they are not infringing someone else rights, I don't care if they spend it on prostitution, drugs or gambling.

I'm surprised they didn't slip in that online gambling was supporting terrorism.

Winner!

The NFL too (though it does say he was formerly employed by the NFL):

On Oct. 20, through pressure from White House officials, specifically a former lobbyist who used to work for the NFL, the Federal Reserve and the Department of the Treasury sent a draft of UIGEA rules to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for final review.

Grr.

That's exactly how our government works. How do you think the recent bailout legislation passed? Throw shit on there to appease all kinds of politicians so they vote for something totally unrelated. Gotta love

Can you back that up? I am not calling you out, I am just curious. I have heard rumors, but I have not heard anything solid.

The NTRA (national thoroughbred racing association) has a huge lobbying arm and tons of money. Just follow the money. Betting on the ponies can be done at many places with advance deposit wagering, heck I've even done it on a credit card over the phone. So I don't have any proof nor have I looked into it much, but it only makes s.
