Here's the deal for some reason I am unable to get my system totally cool. I either have the CPU cool or the motherboard cool. Never both at the same time.
I've tried a slot cooler, no effect on the chip set temp, I've tried a fan duct. Once installed I can't close my case up so that's totally useless.

I've reversed the side panel fan to work as a intake and it blows directly on the CPU. The CPU temp drops but the mobo temp rises. If I put that fan in exhaust mode, CPU temp rises and mobo temp goes down. The interested thing is: In intake mode the CPU sit at around 35C while the mobo goes to 45. If I reverse that the mobo test goes to 35 and the CPU idles at 45(goes up to over 55 under load)

This is driving me fracking nuts.

This is the case(I have a older model but it's very close)

I wanna upgrade this system soon from a Athlon 64 3500 to a X2 4800 and possibly upgrade the video card from a Geforce 6800 GT to something better, but I wanna get temps under control first.
 
Is the system actually unstable? What effect does actually leaving the side panel off have? Also, what is the ambient temp where the computer is? (in the room or whatever)

Yeah when things start to get really hot over 55C for the CPU.

Non that I have noticed

Ranges from 73 - 83 depending on how long I run my computer and keep the door to my room shut. I've only noticed a 3 degree increase on the temp of the cooled part when my room temp goes up. So that's no the problem.

I know what the problem is here, I just don't know how to fix it. The cooling of my case is really only controled by 1 fan. The problem is the upper section(CPU) needs cool air blown on it. The lower section needs the hot air sucked out. The video card is so big that it's trapping all that hot air generated by the CPU and mobo chipset and is only removed if the side panel sucks it out.

I think I need a new case but I have not seen any economical cases with 2 side panel fans. I'm not paying over $250 bucks for that coolmaster stacker with 4 120mm side panel fans.
 
what heatsink?

You could put a fan on the chipset.
I don't understand how you could have bad heat problems if the case is decently ventilated

I don't know what you're using to measure these temps, but have you simply felt around your machine, with your fingers, while it's running?

I'll bet everything is cool to the touch... 😉
 
I use a Craftsman IR Temperature sensor to check my actual temps. When checking OP rigs, I find this method much more accurate and leaves nothing to chance. The software programs are really good but you want to be sure. Just like asking a second opinion.

Touching is the next best thing if you nothing else, that's reasonable.
 
When is your system unstable? With higher CPU temp or with higher chipset temps? I would suggest investing in a chipset cooler, either the ThermalTake Spirit or the Thermalright HR-05. The spirit would be best suited since it actually has a flexible mounting system. If not you dont want to than stay with a cooler proc and let the chipset go up since the proc is more heat sensitive.
 
Do you have any fans in the case except the one on the side panel and the power supply? If you don't have a rear fan then get one and set it as exhaust with the side as intake. Also, to prevent the hot air from being trapped by the video card, remove the slot covers from either side of it.

yup 😀

i had two different programs plus the bios that read idles of 61 and loads of anywhere from 65-76, but only sandra reported more normal ones of 39 idle 43 load. i felt the hsf and it was cool to the touch. really cool compared to my x1900.

so i bought my freezer 64 pro for no reason. but it's a good cooler 😀

just feel the heatsink. i'm also willing to bet it's cool to the touch.
 
You know... this reminds me of global warming...

Where do you measure the temperature of the Earth? In the middle of the ocean? In the middle of the desert? In the middle of a rain forest? At the north or south pole?

Some mobos take CPU temp readings on the CPU itself. Others take the temp reading underneath the CPU socket, and so forth, and so on.

One day, not too long ago, I was sitting here trying to figure out why my computer was so hot, according to these various sensors -- and I thought the hell with it! I'll pull the side panel off and just start feeling around, while it's running...

God's truth -- the only thing that felt warm were the RAM chips on my video card -- and I mean warm -- as in NOT stone cold! Everything else felt cool to the touch!

I know this 'feely touchy' stuff is ghetto as hell, but I don't trust these sensor readings and third-party freeware programs any more.... 😉
