What options do I have for this?

Ok, I've decided to sell my desktop PC to get a new laptop. I've settled on the Dell XPS Gen 2. Well, today I recieved a coupon in an email from them that would give me 33% off (would save me over a thousand easily).

I was planning on selling my current computer to get the money, but since the coupon expires after wednesday, time is an issue. So I currently have my computer, but selling it and getting the money in a day would be, needless to say a little difficult (perhaps not though).

So, what options would I be able to consider, since getting the money through selling my current computer won't be a problem (or shouldn't be), but I don't currently have the money to get the laptop?

I have a single parent, my mother, but I don't want to ask for money (and I'm gonna assume she probably doesn't have the amount I need to loan out at the moment), I'd kinda like to handle it myself.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up just not getting the laptop (at the moment) since I don't know how I could get the money in a day), but thought maybe there's something I haven't considered yet.

Cliffs:
1.) Want to replace current desktop with Inspirion XPS Gen 2 ($$$)
2.) Was going to sell desktop to pay for laptop, but would need to in a single day so I can save over $1000 on the laptop.
3.) Trying to find out my options (which don't include hitting up family/friends for money).
4.) I'm a 20 year old college student.

(Not sure if they'll let it be used on the XPS though)

Well, with $750 off $1500...someone should second guess his choice on laptops if the XPS isn't included... 😉

Well the 33% off will give a bigger discount on the XPS than the $750 off will. $750 off of $3000 is only about 25% (plus both will be done Wednesday).

Would I be able to get a loan in a day though? Keep in mind I do not bank with any local bank (still bank with the bank from the town I lived in).

True. 😀

I'm still not sure if I want to jump on the deal or not. I don't really need a laptop...but I think it would be cool to have one. 😛

what do you need with a $3000 dell that you can't afford?

I was about to ask that myself. I didn't realize it went for 3 grand.

I can afford it since I'll be selling what I currently have to pay for it. I'm trying to figure how to turn my assets into expendable ones quickly so that I would have the money for it.

I'm not aiming to go into debt for this (as thats just pointless and stupid).

your college likely has a payment plan they can set you up on to gradually pay off the computer purchase. Many schools have techy type loan programs. When I was in school, it was pretty much a straight loan where they'd cut me a check, then expect X payments over a certain span of time. Because you actually only need a loan over a short term, you could set up a payment schedule, purchase the new computer, sell the old and then clear out your balance on it.

Well, obviously I don't need it. But if thats the point, then I don't need anything more than an old Celeron running Windows 98 that I had back in high school.

I've worked (built computers for some people, have a job working for the University, and other things) to afford what I have at the moment (which yes is excessive especially for a college student).

I see it though, that the laptop will actually save me money though. Since I can sell my desktop and components for more than what I'd pay for the laptop, and also, I won't be upgrading often like I have been with the desktop (which I afford by selling my previous parts).

Go for the 33% off EPP as the $750 off $1499 will probably exclude XPS models, who knows maybe the 33% also excludes that?

Yes you can get a loan in about 60 seconds through Dell financing. When I had little credit they approved me for up to $5,000 so assuming you have income, low debt and decent credit - you shouldn't have any problems.

As for spending $3k on a laptop I'll spare you the lecture, don't do it.

Hrrm. Think hard about the 9300 instead of the XPS2 if you can. It's 95% of the performance for hundreds less.

Apply for a loan from Dell if you think you can pay it off in full within a month. Dell doesn't have a problem financing your purchase, but they have ridiculous interest rates.

John is right on the money yet again!

I saw the Dell Inspiron 9200 today and I was really impressed. If I were in the market for a desktop replacement laptop I'd probably get an HP or Dell Inspiron 9300 with external USB TV tuner and remote. The 17" LCD is beautiful, nice fit and finish, keyboard, everything.

Bingo, but at least they can have solace in knowing how amazing Doom3 runs on their undersized monitor and keyboard.

Don't think I was trying to be defensive, I know doing this isn't the smartest thing in the world.

I'll think more on this, give the 9300 (or maybe even 700m) more consideration. Maybe I should be more frugal for myself and do something with the extra.

I wouldn't spend $3000+ on a laptop, and since this came along, it would make it so I wouldn't have to.

I'll check into the things you've all suggested and see what might be available to me. I guess depending on whether or not I would be able to get some type of credit, get the XPS with the 33% off, and then turn around and sell it for profit and then go buy a 9300. Thats getting a little complicated though, so yeah, I'll just put that out of my mind.

Thanks for the help everybody. 🙂

BTW, one of my managers just got a 9300 and it is a very nice laptop.

you ever stopped to think there will come a day when this sleazy world of coupon codes and pricematching, and rebates will one day take its toll and you'll have to retire an old man telling the neighborhood kids about the 2001FP you snagged for 250 AR?
