What options do I have for storing a .22 rifle?

Hi, I'm King Nothing, you may remember me from such famous threads as the exploding bug spray video.

So I'm looking at getting a .22 rifle for myself. I checked one out today that a guy advertised in the Thrifty Nickel. It's a Ruger 10/22, 10-magazine clip, he tells me and it looks like it's barely been used. Shined a light down the barrel, every looked clean in there, action is tight and all. He was asking $165, we settled on $155.

The problem is I live in a dorm and campus security at my college won't store it for me. I could leave it with a friend, but then what if he's not there when I want to use it? Do I have any other options?

What about storing it in the dorm? Gun safes with good, high grade digital locks are fairly cheap (~$75 - check places like Ollies Outlet and Big Lots/Odd Lots)

My dorm's lease says no firearms on the property.

I can't store it in my car because I work at an air force base that randomly searches cars at the gate. It wouldn't really do for them to find a rifle in my trunk, know what I'm saying?

disassemble it and put it in the bank

Bah, I don't want to have to reassemble it every time I want to use it. And if I put it in a bank I'd have to retrieve it during business hours.

My parent's place isn't an option because my mom doesn't like guns. Maybe I could keep it in the garage...unlikely though.

There are alot of things you are not supposed to do but do anyway. Like paintball guns. I say just stick it in your closet in a case.

Man, you're really limiting your options here. How about burying it in the woods for the SHTF day, survivalist style?

lol. I was hoping someone would say "Look in the phone book under..." and there would be some service I didn't know about that stored guns for you. If nothing else I'll keep it at a friend's house, I just thought I'd ask on here to make sure there weren't any options I hadn't considered.

ouch...I am in the US and my dorm is considered school property...didn't know about the federal offense thing though. I thought it was just a property manager offense. 😛

Short of a shooting range I don't know who would be in the gun storage biz. If your school has a shooting range you could ask if they'll store it. Though you're back to business hours. Friend's house seems to be the best alternative given the restrictions you have. Or, perhaps better yet, wait till you're living elsewhere before you become a firearm owner.

As for sygyzy's idea of sneaking it in the dorm, if you for whatever reason decide to do that do not tell anyone about it. Not your roommate, not your best friend, not your priest. And even then have it in something locked and boring looking because people love to snoop when you're not looking. Dorms are great rumor mills and soon as it gets back to the residence life people that you have a firearm on campus I'd be surprised if you weren't suspended and evicted immediately, not to mention what ever local laws the police would have to discuss with you. I wouldn't risk it.

Curious, you getting anything else with the gun? When I bought my 10/22 new it was only $140, but that was a few years back.

Kinda sucks about your campus security not storing it. I know even in Canada with the uber strict laws my friend was able to store hers at the capus police station.

EDIT: Funny story. I saw her huge duffel bag on her top shelf and asked what she had in it. She looked at me and said if she was to show me I couldn't tell anyone else. I was kinda curious and said sure. She then went and shut the door. All that was running through my mind was "whips and chains and big dildos and sex toys" haha. Turns out it was her ammo, split-finger shooting glove, shooting jacket and hat with the flaps and crap. She was a SERIOUS shooter. She never told anyone else because they would figure she was a freak or be all anti-gun with her. Very cool.

I'm not getting anything else with the gun, but Ruger makes about a dozen different models of 10/22. The cheapest one has a synthetic stock and goes for $239 new (according to their website, who knows what the gun goes for new elsewhere). Mine has a wood stock so I guess it's more expensive.

Edit: It is weird that campus security won't store it. Campus security at University of Nebraska at Lincoln (Huskers for those who watch college football) will store a gun for you. Unfortunately (well, in that respect at least) I got to U of N at Omaha.
