What Operating System would you use for....

There are a lot of different operating systems out there obviously.

And there are operating systems which overlap in their uses (ie, You could use different operating systems for similar tasks)

What operating system would you use for tasks that you do?

example:

Work - Web Development
- Linux (server and desktop environment)

Games
- Windows and PS2

Surfing / Personal Stuff
- Both Windows and Linux, although I tend to use Linux more often.

For gaming you pretty much have to run Windows or just use a gaming console. For everything else I use Linux with possibly XP in VMWare for any Windows-only stuff.

I use windows all the time...

Gaming: windows, xbox360, psp
Internet: windows, windows mobile, symbian
Development: .NET framework 2.0/3.5...so Windows again, I use RealBasic for Mac apps.
Server: Windows (IIS, SQL server, Oracle)
Personal: Windows
Design/Editing: Windows (Photoshop, word, premiere etc)

Work -- ideally LINUX / UNIX of various kinds.

Surfing -- ideally LINUX / UNIX of whatever flavor of the month, SUSE, Fedora, Solaris, etc.

Personal stuff -- LINUX.

Games -- Well I've got an increasing number that will run under LINUX, e.g. Unreal, Unreal 2004, maybe eventually UT3, ETQW, etc.

Some will run under WINE under LINUX like Guild Wars, WOW, etc., though usually I don't prefer to use WINE under LINUX to run a Windows Game if I can help avoiding it.

Otherwise I have broke down and installed Vista64 dual-boot to run DX9/DX10 Games like COD4, Oblivion, BFME2, etc. I also run Photoshop and Microsoft software development tools etc. that way, so I suppose once you have the ability to boot Windows you might as well make best use of it for your software that runs better that way.

Other stuff -- for small things that don't depend on DX9/DX10 or USB access or whatever I'll just run stuff inside a virtual machine that runs WinNT or Vista or XP or whatever while running under LINUX x64.
