I am upgrading my home network switch to Netgear GS108.
I want to get some cat6 patch cables (7-10 ft) Which online places do you guys get your cables from?

Local stores are charging $6 each. I figure I can get them for around $3 each for a good quality cat6 cables.

Cat5e is outdated and not suited for network standards that are in development. Basically any new network (10 gig) will be based on Cat6. Last I heard 10 gig over copper will be here next year. Essentially cat5e is dead.

I've ordered network patch cables and keystone jacks several times from http://monoprice.com. They ship "instantly", shipping is very reasonable, and prices are really good. My searches on tech sites have shown lots of good reviews for them.

Both deepsurplus & monoprice seem to offer good price.

I think I will choose deepsurplus since I need 10 ft patch cables in a few places instead of 7 ft.

Thanks for the links.

I thought that only the Cat7 standard would support 10Gbps, when did this change?

AFAIK the push is for 100 meters over cat6. Friend at work is heavily involved in the IEEE and that's what he's saying. It's the cable manufacturers that want to push their own solution.

So it's second hand info...

Thanks for the good info spidey07. :) I just poked around and it looks like the new 500Mhz/10Gbps standard will be called Cat6a.

Does this mean that fiber (in the 10Gbps) range will become obselete?

For critical/high bandwidth/long runs fiber will remain king. Although the usefullness of 62.5 micron MM fiber is pretty dead IMHO. High bandwidth 50 micron has taken over the MM world.
