Canadian piracy rates are ~10%. American piracy rates are ~5%. China is ~90%. Indonesia is ~85%. China and Indonesia are getting Windows XP Starter Edition to try to turn that around. Also, in the US and Canada, OS piracy rates are lower than general piracy rates because the vast majority of pirates still own prefab computers that came with Windows anyway.

Interesting about Asia.

So there has to be some stats out there broken down by country and then rolled up to "all versions of windows"

Wow, thats amazing their piracy rates are so high. And even more amazing that we are so low in comparison. I would have thought the US would be right up there with the other 'top' countires 🙂

when the Valve's Steam survey shows 500,000 more copies of windows than microsoft has of verified legit windows sold

Companies aren't going to be able to do much about pirating in Asia and such. The government needs to be the ones to take action against it, the production and distribution of pirated software for profit, specifically. In China sometimes it is easier to find pirated software than legit stuff. Companies are trying to improve sales by charging prices that are realistic for the country's average income (82 RMB for HL2 in China right now) but no matter what they do they can't compete with the pirates.

If MS were to ever succeed in making their product pirate-proof, it would probably spur the growth of linux and perhaps other new OS's. Of course, the odds of that happening are zilch, considering MS can't even keep their products from getting hacked every 5 seconds.....

As of 2 weeks ago, I am now completely legit in my house. It's kind of nice not to have to find workarounds when doing updates and stuff.

I'd bet very little of Microsoft's software is pirated... From what I understand they write just about all of their own software; but I seem to recall a story that some portion of one of their programs was found to be pirated from somewhere else.

Ohhh, I misunderstood the thread 🙂

Doubt there's a whole lot of pirating with the OS itself. Most people buy their system preconfigured with a windows OS (often no other choice even available) and as such, they have a legal license.
