What Nvidia or 3dfx card in the past would a Matrox G200 compare to speed wise?

I just picked up a Matrox G200 for pretty cheap ($10). I know this is an older card but I wanted it for my Linux workstation (b/c of the good 2d quality and it has drivers for DirectFB which I want to play with some). Anyways, I know it's not a 3d speed demon, but about what Nvidia or 3dfx card would it compare to in 3d? I just want to know if I might still have enough 3d power to run my OpenGL screensavers and TuxRacer.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmm, it *might* be as fast as an original 4mb Voodoo, but I doubt it. It probably is equivalent with a Riva 128, but I haven't a clue.

With a PII-400, here is how the G200 did on Quake2:

Demo1
640x480x16 37.4 fps
800x600x16 29.5 fps
1024x768x16 21.2 fps

That's pretty slow. My thankfully-retired P200MMX with a 12MB Voodoo2 could pull 32-34fps in 800x600x16. So I'd say the G200 is less than a Voodoo2 but more than an original Voodoo. On the NVidia, it's much like a TNT.

m HP vectra vli8 server has a g200 on board.

total crap foorquake. great for a server because it frees up already scarce slots, and the 2d is great

A Riva would have "fun" spanking it in games.

If i remember correctly, when it was in use as y main machine, age of empires kept on freezing while the card refreshed. It would be playable despite the pauses.

Unfortunately my Radeon gotfried and I have to RMA it, so I have to use my new AMD XP system with a s3 virge 2MB...NOW THAT IS A PIECE OF CRAP

Crashes my awesome sytem when trying to play AOE2..lol

It can't do overlay, so even divx movies, or any video is out of the picture.

My G200 played Age of Empires just fine. :)

Actually played the original tribes ok as well...not in OpenGL, tho.

It's performance is right inbetween the Riva128 and TNT.

Ok everyone think back to when the Riva128, Riva128ZX, Voodoo2, and TNT came out. The G200 gets spanked by all of these cards, and is lucky to even have a working OpenGL ICD.

The G200 is faster than a card w/o a 3D engine, that's about it.

The G200 is meant for 2D use, that's why I bought one for my work machine. My G200 chokes on winamp visuals.

Admitedly, the G200 is not a top 3D performer, but my old trusty G200 held up pretty well. I had no prob's at all running tribes or halflife. The card even pulled through more demanding games such as hitman and shogun without any major problems.
The card work best with directx. OpenGL and glide causes a lot of problems, so I don't know about the screensavers.

The RIVA 128 has absolutely nothing over the G200. The G200 is only slightly slower than a Voodoo 2, but much faster than a Voodoo. The original TNT spanked them all though.

If it cant do overlay though, its useless.
