Hello all, long time reader since the days of first Athlon but hardly posted

Here's my 1½ year old system:
P4 2.8C m0 stepping @ 14x230mhz temp 55C~yikes!
MSI Neo2 865PE board
corsair xms 2x516 3200LL

Just this week I bought a x800xl agp with hopes to boost my performance in HL2 & BF2, but it was rather disappointing to find that I could barely break 5000 in 3Dmark05, getting 25-75fps/45fps avg in HL2, 19-60fps/35avg in BF2 all with med setting no AA/AF. Worst of all, I had to RMA the board yesterday for the 3rd time because the southbridge melted which made me very frustrated and want to give up this setup altogether, spend another 900 dollars to jump on the A64 bandwagon and sell the old parts.

However I find it hard to part ways with my cpu since it's a freaking OC monster - took it over to my friend's last year and tested on his Asus P4C800 w/ swiftech 120 we were kicking it all the way past 3.8g.

So here's the question, could I spend less money and get the Abit IC7-G(What's the difference between max2 and max3? that wacky front side cooler?) and a better cooler to OC my cpu to 3.6Ghz or higher but still get a decent performance compared to say an Venice 3500 stock speed?

It sounds like that CPU is a beast...it just needs a better mobo.

I don't think an A64 would be really worth upgrading to in a practical sense anyway if you can get that to 3.5 GHz.

BTW, BF2 really runs well with 2 GB of RAM instead of just 1 GB.

Yeah this cpu is very very good, I bought it for $190 last year now retails for $250, I think I'll definately keep it.

Too bad they don't make my 2-2-2-6 ram anymore.....
