What notebook mfrs are known for value?

ASUS tends to get good bang for the buck I've found, although lately some of their notebooks have gone up in price, so they aren't quite in the cheap category anymore

Acer and Asus are my top two. Acer is probably one of the cheapest when it comes to low-mid end laptops. You don't get many frills, but the construction is solid. Asus has more value in the mid-high end. Asus has a few more frills, and the construction quality is very good. They are below most in the low-mid end in price, but Acer is almost always cheaper in that segment.

acer, compaq, lenovo g series can be had pretty cheap too at times and they feel more solid than the other brands' low-end.

I would stay far away from Compaq; I've heard nothing but bad about their quality lately.

lately maybe... but their laptops resemble HPs in design and seem solid. 1 going on 3 years without issues.

But I would suggest Lenovo G series as those feel solid, slightly lighter/smaller than the other's clunky 15.6" models and almost entirely matte surfaces.
