I can't seem to find a laptop with all of these specs. The dells i see either are missing firewire, or the screen resolutions isn't high enough, or they just are too thick. This will be my first laptop purchase and i am hoping to have it for a long time, so i want everything included when i buy it so i won't have to worry about upgrading later.

These are the specs that i want in a notebook:
Pentium M (at least 1.3 Ghz)
512 MB RAM
Wireless g (b compatible)
30-40GB hdd
1394 Firewire port
Serial Port
Parllel Port
2 USB
DVD/CD-RW Combo
S-Video Video Out
Audio Out
rj-45 ethernet port
at least 32MB video (64MB preferred)

At most 1.3" in height (although 1.0" preferred)
either 12.1" or 14.1" (or anything in the middle) with sxga+(for the 14.1"). Wideaspect also fine 15.4".

Check out the Apple PowerBook line.

For instance 2599 dollars get's you:

15.2-inch TFT Display
1280x854 resolution
1.25GHz PowerPC G4 (about equal with a 1.3-1.7 ghz pentium4 depending on the task)
512K L2 cache
512MB DDR333 SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA/100
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (64MB DDR)
Backlit keyboard
Gigabit Ethernet (nice)
FireWire 400 & 800 (2 ports, one for 400 the other for 800)
AirPort Extreme built-in (higher speed 802.?? thingy)
DVI & S-Video out

That comes with the "SuperDrive", DVD/CDROM burner.

Plus a lot of other little details like the way the ports are arranged on the side, the cdrom slot loader on the front, SOLID aluminum housing, keyboard layout, quietness, coolness (as in temp and looks.) shows the high quality that apple has been cultivating in a big way lately.

It's a device that will make people envy you and make them wonder why they got a dell instead.

Pluss the usefull life of a mac is much longer then a x86 machine. Still plenty of 300-500mhz apples being used today.

It'll look nice with your ipod anyways. :p

And OS X is much nice OS (IMHO) then winXP. Like a old boss told me once: his apple was "The best investment I ever made".

Its worth looking into at least.

i agree with what you say about macs. i have a friend with a nice looking g4 widescreen laptop. it's aesthetically beautiful, but i have never really used a mac. in addition to that i have so much software for my PC (ranging from video editing software to music making programs). i also want to be able to transfer things between both computers (i have a PC compatible desktop), and program on both with the programming software that i have. thanks for the input though.

oh and i have already looked into dell, all their configurations do not satisfy my criteria.

Some Toshiba Tecra and Portege models have all of those features. Good build quality and a 3 year warranty, too. I use a Libretto L5 for daily use but have a Tecra M1 to lug around when I need more power.

A lot of newer laptops are dropping the serial ports and the PS/2 ports. You're going to be somewhat hard pressed to find a laptop that matches exactly what you need.

i was thinking that i either want a 12.1" with XGA or 14.1"with sxga+ or 15.4" with WXGA (or greater) but i don't want to get a 15". i basically want something small and portable, but i'll make an exception for the wide screen.

man, that is so sweet, except the screen size is too big. i can't seem to find a laptop configured with the same things with a 14.1" sxga+ screen.

You can get a 14" screen from the link I posted above. It just costs less. Oh wait....... :)
