So that all you get done for the tune up price is the oil change; then they just LOOK at other things and if they need attention they ask for more $$$.

BTW what kind of car are we talking about (or is this just a general question)

It's a '93 Mazda 626 with ~100,000 miles on it. It has a distributor so I'm pretty sure it'll need a timing adjustment.

oil change, spark plugs, air filter. do not take to the shop for a "tune up." it's a $99 rip off.

the spark plugs ($6 total) and air filter (~$10@ walmart) you can change yourself in 5 min.

oil change is ~$15 @ walmart.

and for those that say fuel filter, i say blah. does gas reach the engine w/o hesitation? if yes then the fuel filter isnt clogged. if there's signs of hesitation when you press on the gas, there's PLENTY of time to get the fuel filter replaced.

Same goes with water pump. it doesnt just fail all at once. you'll see signs of leakage (green coolant droplets on floor). you have time to get it to the shop at your leisure.
