What new in TV's

GF and I bought a house and are looking to get a larger TV. It's her suggestion BTW. 🙂

We currently have a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma 1080p. I would love to get another one but I here they do not make them anymore.

Not sold on getting a 4K or curved TV

Would like to get something with a great pictures

Will link it up to my sound system

Will be used mainly to watch TV shows and movies

Maybe the occasional Blue Ray disk

What models are brands should I look at?

Well I have been out of the TV game for awhile

TV size something bigger than 50

I would like to keep the price under 2500

If I was buying a set now, I would probably get the Samsung PN60F8500.

A friend of mine has one, and it looked awesome. The speakers suck, but I would be using my surround sound anyway.

Well I took a look around and was able to find a pn64f8500. A bit larger then I was planning to get. I think 60 would be perfect but I can not find one locally.

I was able to find a store that says on line that they have a Panasonic TCP60ZT60. But it says that they only have one. Must be an inventory mistake or there must be something wrong with it.

Problem is we don't move into our house until the end of February. No sure what I'm going to do if I need to buy a TV now.

Love what I've read about OLED. Sound like we need to wait a few years before it's ready for prime time.

When plasma is gone its gone. Everything reasonable will be LED for a while, that Samsung is your last shot at that level of PQ at that price for years.

From what I've read on AVSForum, part of it is it being ready for prime time.

The other part is that not every manufacturer is investing in OLED so some will say anything and everything bad about it humanly possible because if OLED becomes the future, they'll be very very far behind.

Don't be surprised if OLED gets screwed over the same way Plasma did. Sadly, Marketing > Best Product.

Not sure why youre not sold on 4k. Its the shit.

No content. I don't recommend it to a person who needs to ask "What's new in TV's" (no offense OP).

I recommend it to a person who knows what they're getting into. It's not cost effective for the average consumer to be purchasing right now. I don't want to write an essay for OP on the subject because no one wants to read an essay online.

if that ZT60 is a new model and not a open box, I would buy it in a second

Agreed. The ZT60 is the new king of the hill for a while for people who use a TV for watching cinematic content and can't afford OLED.

All the videophiles are going to pine over that ZT like they pined over the last gen Kuros for years and years. Every year for the next couple years it will be that "sure this top model 4K LED is pretty nice and has a ton of pixels, but we wish it could deliver the overall picture quality of the now four year old Panasonic ZT60. In head to head matchups with the ZT blacks look grey and the crystal clear 4k pictures lacks the pop we find in the plasma set."

It is going to make TV reviews unbearable for everyone who doesn't care or who didn't get a shot at a Panasonic...

Going to check it out this weekend. I expect that it's either an inventory error of as you said an open box. I would be really surprised to find an unopened unit.

From what I can see, 4K TV's are not quite there yet. Issues with the chips and firmware (TV vs. PC Monitor use) and really very little content right now.

3D looks like the market has passed it by. Samsung was some pretty good prices on their top end 1080P TVs with 3D right now. More 3D content than 4K content and firmware and chips are more mature.

So many TV's are "Smart TV's" which I find to be a complete waste of time. PS4, Xbox One and AppleTV/Ruku (or insert your own smart box here) all do the "smart" part better. However, the better picture quality Tv's all come with the "smart" features that you need to pay for.

Plasma (which is all I have used for the last decade +) is just about dead.

I would go for the best 1080P set you could find at a reasonable price below $1K and then wait 5 years to see what else happens.

Well it pays to be patient. Was at a local furniture chain of all places shopping for a new bed and they were blowing out 60" Samsung 8500 plasmas. Was able to pick up one of the few that they had. Most likely all gone by now.
