Long story short, I do 99% of my gaming on PC. I am a huge hockey fan though, and unfortunately the only goddamn way to play NHL is on xbox or PS.

Last gen, I played on 360 primarily because I like the controller better. Not to mention XBL was better than PSonline at the time of purchase (not sure how it compares now). I still use the 360 controller for PC games, so im used to the staggered setup of the analog sticks.

Ive heard the PS4 controller is much improved, and some prefer it to the new XBONE controller. I went ahead and ordered a PS4 controller to try out on PC to see if I like it, but im doubtful for some reason.

One last thing im having a hard time with is that I try to "vote with my dollar" as much as possible. On PC, I refuse to buy games with DRM (not including steam), EA games, Ubisoft, and shit like that. I absolutely wouldn't even buy a console if it werent for NHL, but like I said I need my hockey (especially since Bergeron is on the cover this year).

Im already buying a fucking EA game against my will, but which company deserves my money more? I feel like Sony takes the cake here, and if I have to get on board with either, they seem like the way to go - MS can go suck a dick.

If Sony's controller is OK i think thats what im gonna do. Lemme know your thoughts...

Go to a Best Buy or Gamestop and try each controller.

I prefer the way the DS4 feels in my hands, it just seems to be a better fit. The XB1 controller isn't bad, but it has some sharper corners and the analog sticks are taller which is something I'm not really a fan of.

I prefered the PS4 controller as well, but both are pretty solid this generation.

If you are really only getting it for NHL i'd just go for the PS4 because it has the hardware advantage. Not that NHL is going to need a lot of power from the console, but might as well buy the one that has the most GPU power available.

oh god another one of these threads...

get whatever console has the games you want to play and has the controller that you like, not what strangers on the internet like better and tell you to get.

Personally I'll still take a Bone controller over a DS4 controller. That said the PS4 controller is almost usable now compared to the DS3 and Sixaxis controllers. Honestly besides the touch panel which I haven't run into a great usage for my biggest issue is battery life. The battery experience on the controller is absolutely terrible.

It doesn't have a swappable battery which is fine if they use the extra space for a larger battery. But I swear the thing is run by a rechargeable CR2032, because it's weighs so little in comparison to the bone controller, and the battery lasts a very very very small time. Playing TLOU on the PS3 and PS4 really shows it. I recharged the PS3 controller (sixaxis) once during my first play through. The PS4 version I did it about 4 times. Also the DS4 doesn't seem to charge or does it very very slowly, if your using the controller, unlike the charge and play on the 360 controller. Best I can tell I am getting about 4-5 hours a charge.

This is compared to my bone. I get between 12-15 hours on my 2x 2400mAH Eneloop batteries on my Bone controller. The Li-ion MS battery is supposed to get around 20. On top of all that they are swap-able which means you don't have to tether yourself, just pop in a battery you charged earlier. If the two were reversed that would be one thing (a 12-15 hour internal and a 4 hour swap-able) but 4 hours on the non-replaceable is dismal. As for the bone controller, it feels more solid than the 360, the digital pad is much better, I like the new analog sticks, but I'll agree that the bumpers could be better. It's a very incremental upgrade overall from the 360 controller, much like the DS2 to the DS3.

If you didn't like the DS3/Sixaxis then while the DS4 is 4x more usable and very comparable to the bone experience, it's wireless experience is so terrible that overall its a wash. Xbone over PS4 controller any day of the week.

The DS4 is very much improved over previous PS controllers. But it 100% comes down to personal preference. Personally, I like the way the sticks are arranged non-linear on the Xbox controllers better. But honestly, I bet it would only take a few game sessions to get used to any controller.

In every Xbox vs PS comparison thread, I post the same thing... It's all about the games.

Yeah, I know you already said it's all about the controller for you. But I would still urge you to look at each system's lineup (present and future.) You are spending $400+ on a console, are you sure that there isn't more than one game that will pique your interest? No racers, platformers, action games, etc?

How about friends... Got any friends that play on one system or the other?

Well, if you decide on an Xbox, add me to your list. NHL is always the game that gets the bulk of my playing time. :)

I voted neither for obvious reasons. The games are lackluster, although Titanfall is pretty sick. There just isn't enough games to justify a purchase of that magnitude.

I bought my son an Xbox One for Xmas and he is mostly still playing his PS3. The funny thing is when I listed his Xbone (per his request) on Craigslist, I got texts/calls everyday for 3-4 weeks from people trying to trade me their PS4 for his Xbone.

Right now, if you really want a new gaming machine, you should just build a PC. No BS online fees, more genres of games available, and all the good games on console release on the PC as well (Titanfall et al). I remember when everyone was calling the Gamecube the "kiddie console". Well, nowadays all the consoles are the kiddie console and the WiiU is the family console.

I will note that I have no issues with DS4 battery life. Yeah it's only 5 hours but 5 hours of gameplay is a long time. I rarely if ever, play for that amount of time and I don't personally know anyone who does. When you're done, plug the controller in or get a charging stand and it's always ready. Not an issue unless you absolutely forget every time to plug it in.

I don't think you'd really have a problem with either controller honestly. It's not like one sucks and one is amazing. A few minutes of play and I forget about the controller. I know it's different than the other but I can jump back and forth easily.

I find that this kind of question is like asking strangers : "What kind of Pizza do I like?".

You just have to try for yourself, there's no right answer that someone else can give you. Everything out right now has great games available, and all of the hardware is decent, so what's to do except get them in your hands and decide for yourself?

I have to many wireless devices to worry about all of them always being plugged in. Outside when I am marathoning a game the battery seems to last weeks on end. On top of not wanting to worry about the battery going out during during a Saturday gaming session, not wanting to have to decide which devices i worry about plugging in at night, i have to keep the PS controller on a charger because its almost always near death after a couple weeks on off no use, while i can get months of two to three hours of no use on any other controller (including the DS3). I don't know how its acceptable for a controller to barely last one slightly above average gaming session.

So, what kind of PC should he build/buy to play NHL15? (Or did you not even bother to read his original post?)

Yep, just go to the store and play around with them. I have the PS4 and it's alright, but the controller isn't perfect IMO. Haven't tried the Xbone one, so I can't speak for it. Will be rocking the 360 controller on PC for a while me thinks.

Nope, didn't bother because I find it hard to believe someone would spend upwards of a thousand bucks to play NHL15. I mean seriously people...wtf?

If that's all you're getting it for then it really doesn't matter one bit which one you buy because you just got scammed by the game companies, like so many other people willingly do.

Umm read the OP.

Duuhhhh, no. Didn't see the need given the question was in the title and poll. Sorry to offend your superiority complex.

Both controllers are great. I'd be more concerned with the other benefits of each console. If you could use a nice cable box interface or picture in picture functionality then the Xbox would be best. If you would like to dabble in free games (you will have PSN+ to play online) then the PS4 would be the better buy. Also the PS4 will have a slight edge on visuals as it has 50% more shader cores than the Xbox going forward.

Not sure how much you use the shoulder buttons when playing, but both of my original PS4 controllers had sticky buttons. Ordered a new one and it's holding up so far, but not sure if it will have the same issues.

Problems aside, I think both are pretty pleasant to play with, though the ability to quickly swap out batteries on the XB1 has advantages. I always seem to be charging the PS4 controller.

You're kind of a dumbass when you respond to a thread that you haven't read. Just saying.

Like everyone else has said, play around with both controllers, then make your decision. Should be easy, especially if all you care about is hockey. Hell, pick up a used console if that's the case.

I am sure it's not about superiority complex's and what not. Nothing you said had anything to do with the title even, since it implied that the OP's worry was with controllers and not which console had the most shaders or better exclusives and so on. Controllers.

I have a 360 and PS3 and am fine with using either controller when I can't play something on my gaming PC. So I have no opinion on that part.

I don't own an X1 or PS4 yet because neither has enough games I want to play. Eventually that may change. If your budget only allows buying one of them you might look at what games are coming to each that you care about.

For games on both: graphics will be better on the PS4, online play may be better on the X1 since Live is supposed to still be better than PSN.

If you have a PS3 and/or Vita, one advantage of PSN+ over Live is better free games and more of them.

One last thing im having a hard time with is that I try to "vote with my dollar" as much as possible. Sony seems to have learned humility from losing with the PS3, while MS learned arrogance from winning. It took MS a year to decide that they were going to focus on games instead of pushing voice-activation and motion sensing tech to control your cable box.

thanks for all the feedback! So what I actually ended up doing is just buying both controllers to test out (gift card) - they both do work on PC right? (Im pretty sure with some tinkering I can try them out in some games.) Once I choose one, I know a few people with systems that could use either a XBONE or PS4 controller.

Im really hoping the PS4 wins out, or at least is as good as the Bone, because if I have to give anyone money I think Id rather have it be Sony than MS.

And yes I actually am buying this for pretty much ONE game. (we played this game almost every day) I mean im sure if a few of my friends pick up some dumb game we can all play together ill give it a shot, but hockey is the only reason im buying a system. Id love to just not buy either because Id rather just strictly play on PC, and put my money where my mouth is, but im caving on this one. Too bad nintendo's system is so underpowered. I would have no problem at all getting behind them.

Does anyone know the state of getting these two controllers to work on PC?

And also - can you play and charge with the ps4 controller at the same time? Im a little worried about the battery issue someone mentioned.

If you only care about the controller and absolutely nothing else, get the Xbox One. The Xbox360 controller is perfect to hold and use (and I have a PS3 and PS4... had an Xbox360, sold it). Meaning Xbox One controller is perfect too :)

While the PS4 controller is greatly improved from PS3 (my hands were getting numb from that POS!), it's not as good as the Xbox360 one, let alone the Xbox One. I do enjoy playing games on the PS4, but I miss the Xbox 360 controller.

You can play and charge the PS4 controller (I do that when I forget to plug it in after playing some games and the battery dies). The battery will last you for a few hours (I did not manage to kill it in one day yet...) but it's noticeably shorter than my Xbox 360 controllers.

So my vote goes to Xbox One (again, if you only care about the controller).

Yes you can charge and play the PS4 controller, it's just noticeably slower to do so than the Xbox360 controller. Also the XboxOne controller has a driver for the PC but their isn't a wireless receiver for it so you will need to keep it tethered.
