I was using PowerAmp, which worked really well, but now I just use Rdio because it has almost everything I need.

Ok, how do I get the music onto my phone?
Kies seems to be horrible.
Is that still the best way?

Drag and drop. I have never used Kies for anything. Just plug the phone in and copy over whatever music you want (mine was all organized in folders already, so just copied over as-is). Then when I launched PowerAmp, I selected the directories I wanted it to look in for music files, et voila, c'est tout!

I like N7 personally. Looks great with larger screens. Not so great on tiny phones.

poweramp, most robust music player I have found for android. I even paid for the full version.

also, you can use airdroid as a (better) alternative to kies for OTA file transfers and a lot more. this however is much slower than physically plugging in via USB.

I paid for PowerAmp as well. Gives me no trouble ever and so far has played everything I've thrown at it.

I either just drag and drop with the USB cable or I turn on a FTP server in ES Explorer and copy the music over that way.

I recently came across Neutron Player, which supposedly sounds better than Poweramp. Give it a try.

iSyncr, integrates beautifully with iTunes. Player Pro imho is better than Poweramp, but that's just my opinion. When I owned Android phones I had paid for and used both a lot. Player Pro for playing, iSyncr Wifi for syncing wirelessly was the best combo I came across. Dragging and dropping as others in here have suggested is only good for tiny collections or ones that that you don't ever really mess with.

Poweramp

Only one I found with good enough sound quality to let me ditch my dedicated mp3 player. Just make sure you have DVC enabled in the app settings.

The UI isn't great but I take sound quality over aesthetics any day.

direct volume control. You'll find it in poweramp's settings. although it's on by default

N7 player at the moment. Also dSub which works with my Subsonic server.

I like PowerAmp too- purchased it but somehow haven't installed it on my SGS3.

Yup. Makes equalizing the music sound a lot better. You're able to get quite a bit more kick out of your bass without getting any clipping like other apps. It's worth trying the free version out to see if you hear a difference. It's night and day with the music I listen to. I've tried other recommended music players and they all sound god awful in comparison.
