Either pleasantly or negatively?
Albums that caught me off guard:
Monuments to an Elegy by The Smashing Pumpkins:
I didn't think I'd like it as I've not cared much for them (him) recently. But the pairing of Tommy Lee from Motley Crue plus the musical maturity and lyrical content were pleasantly surprising.
Second Hand Heart by Dwight Yoakam:
I loved and adored a lot of his early stuff, specifically Buenos Noches from a Lonely Room. Recently, again, I've been disappointed. Now, with this release, I'm finding myself appreciative and grateful. Also has a mature sound but with a return to many of the things that I used to love.
Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey:
At a point when I thought that Born to Die couldn't be topped, she went darker, more layered, and much more thought-provoking. Have loved this album since it was released. No signs of let up.
Ryan Adams' self-title album has brought so much joy. He is the third artist who's comeback or reinvention has worked, in my opinion. I love his hard-driving rock songs. Sometimes, it seems that he's almost Springsteen-ian without copying whatsoever.
The Black Keys - Turn Blue:
I've enjoyed many of their albums, more or less. I really wanted to like this one but I was unable to find anything likable about it. I found it boring and completely forgettable. Sorry guys.
So what do you think? What are some albums that you have been surprised by?
