What movie is this....????

I remember watching a movie a few years ago on TV that was somewhat a tech/geek movie.

It took place on a school campus it seemed, and there was some kind of contest to create the best tech product. Basically it was a battle between these two teams throughout the whole movie on who could be the most innovative. It Maybe it wasn't a school, but a company instead...but i don't remember. I don't remember the cast, I just remember it was a tech driven movie and it wasn't a blockbuster either.

Does anyone know what movie this could be?

there was a contest on who could break into a dorm room the quickest. The one dude built a diarama of the room showing it locked but when you unlocked it then it actually locked the room.

The "company" involved was the US Military who stole their laser design for a weaponized use.

Possible spoiler

Remember the popcorn house at the end?

what? are we talking about the same movie? i don't remember them trying to break into a room.

and the US military didn't steal it, they were making it for the head teacher guy who was making it for the military.

the popcorn in the house at the end was the only part of the stuff you typed that i remember happening.

Such a classic movie.

*Flying machine crashes through window*
"Would you classify that as a launch problem or a design problem?"

Dude, I've watched Real Genius many many many times over the years. The stuff in bold didn't happen. The main characters worked on a research team which designed a laser (later tested by the U.S. military), but there was no competition between people.

They broke into Kent's room but it wasn't a competition.

i don't think they really broke in, did they? they used that gas to put him to sleep and then they opened the door? i guess you could consider that breaking in, but...

you're thinking of an episode of MacGuyver

there was also the door attached to a clock that they sped up with a signal generator and 8 or so locks that you had to get in the right combination (they used magnets to figure out which were open and which were not)
