What moves a country to cry out in outrage?

Every year I see things that the U.S. as a country actually get riled up about and voice their opinion openly to the public, and every year it gets more and more absurd.

In a time when things are going down the tubes on a large scale, we have vented in large numbers on the following subjects:

1.) Anna Nicole Smith death, life, death again vs. Who's the Daddy of Anna Nicole Smith's baby
2.) Can't find a Wii vs. Wii sucks
3.) A 150 year old man wearing a giant cowboy hat who is on too early in the morning for 80% of the country to care says something racist vs. the entire African American race and Obama
4.) Can't get rid of Sanjaya vs. We Love Sanjaya! vs. I hate American Idol
5.) Pet food recall vs. pet food recall
6.) Linux still sucks vs. This is the Year of Linux
7.) Tower Defense games vs. ballon popping games
8.) Sanjaya still here vs. Sanjaya's still in it! vs. I still hate American Idol
9.) Lost is too slow vs. Heroes is too slow vs. TV sucks vs. we'll all too fat to care
10.) War in Iraq vs. War in Iran vs. Harry Potter dying vs. Harry Potter not dying

Miss anything?

Yes you missed the fact that what the media goes into a frenzy about is not necessarily what moves the country to cry out in outrage.

Sadly, what the media ballyhoos about is what the masses care about. :(

Not true. No one has mentioned the Imus thing even once at work this week. Same with the Anna Nicole nonsense.

I wanna work where you do, because I've heard the name Imus 3 times this morning in 3 different conversations, and when the Anna Nicole hearing stuff was on the TV in the lobby, 40% of the office was huddled out there watching.

Apparently I need to work in a more manly field than real estate :).

Actually, that seems to have really fallen off the radar since the elections, at least from what I've noticed.

Same with gas prices.

We seem to go through "impending social disasters" like XBox 360 titles, it's only interesting til it's not anymore.

Believe it or not I am in a middle school. Maybe it is too politically sensitive a topic to be discussed by teachers but even when it is just us adults the subject has not come up at all. Anna Nicole was mentioned here and there when it first happened but other than that it has not been discussed at all.

I've heard the kids talking about him in the halls a bit but that's about it.
