What Motorsickle to Buy?

Alright peoples, I've decided that I want to trade in my current bike and try something else. I currently have a 2001 Kawasaki Ninja 500R (a.k.a. EX500) with about 12k miles. I bought it as a starter bike last may, and have put all but the first 2500 miles on it. Regular oil changes, chain lubes, cleanings, and all that good stuff. New tires, but it'll need new pads up front and in the back in a few hundred miles or so (probably about $100-150 total, including labor) just to be safe. I want to trade it out before then.

I have no particular brand loyalties, though here are the specifics that I'm looking for: something in the 1996+ range, $4500 tops, never put down, and has had regular maintenance. Beyond that, I'm fairly flexible. I do want a sport bike though, so no cruiser recommendations for the time being. I also don't want anything larger than a 600 or 750, as I'll be using it mostly for inner-city commuting (read: college campus), and 900's and litre bikes are, for the most part, just too heavy when there are that many pedestrians/slow moving vehicles around. Also, 600/750 is plenty fast for me at the moment; I have a Duc available to borrow from my step father if I feel like killing myself.

So, what all do you recommend? I'm not TOTALLY stringent on the year requirements, but wouldn't want anything much past 94, as I frankly don't much like the styling beyond that point. I was thinking Honda based on reliability, as I honestly don't know much about how well the mid/late 90's bikes of the other big manufacturers hold up. I'd hopefully like something from either honda, yamaha, suzuki, or another kawa.

Also, any random thoughts on how much I could expect in return for my current bike? It's in great condition, as I've never dropped it , and was told by the dealer that the same had been true of the previous owner. The only "problems" are a few scuff marks on the exhaust that were caused by the previous owner's passenger burning their shoe soles off on the pipes. Also a few minor scrapes on the tank (read: previous owner probably wore heavy neck jewelry while riding).

Trust me, I'd love the 750SS (and honestly hadn't thought of it till you mentioned it). Only problem is I've seen how temperamental duc's can be. Forgot to mention above that the bike will be my primary means of transportation (at least for a few months), and so I need something that won't give me any problems starting up on a cold day.

Then again, the sound of that v-twin might almost be worth the b!%chiness :)

If you take care of it you should be fine, and why wouldn't you want to take care of it? :)

Honda VFR 800s are v-twins too right? Maybe look at those? I don't know how far back they go, but I seem to recall them being a fairly new model.

But yeah, whatever you do make sure you get a twin :)

Yeah, I used to like those MV Agustas too, and the Benellis, but that was until I was sitting downtown one day and this guy rode by on his Duc 900 SS... The rumble from the bike actually rattled the windows in the first 3 floors of the highrise buildings It was so cool seeing them ripple like that :)

Then this other time I was standing at an intersection downtown and this vette drove by, followed by a Duc with some aftermarket carbon pipes (it was just idling and rolling through the intersection), followed by a 5.0 mustang... The Duc drowned out all the other traffic :)

I have a sweet clip of the new desmosedici motoGP bike (V-4) doing a run down a straight. I think they had it set up in the regular firing mode though as it gets pretty high. Gotta find it.

Heh, I just love how it's so quiet to begin with... I thought it was just recorded really low so I turned my stereo way up... VROOOMMM!!! :)

It's sweet how it starts so low and just keeps getting higher and higher.

If you want a crotch rocket then go Suzuki. I like hondas Crusiers, but the F/I system on their crotch rockets needs work. BUT suzuki's crusiers need work, while their crotch rockets are the best.

But the SV650 is a great bike if you can find one that has not been raped. Finding a good crotch rocket that has not been beat on, mis-taken care of, is hard.

Of course don't do this!!!!!

NO NO NO, and wear a helmet!!!!!!

Don't worry everyone, I'm going to be keeping the helmet that I currently own (a Shoei) as it's flat black, and therefore goes with just about anything. I do need to buy a pair of leathers once I get the money, though...or at least a riding jacket.

I'll look into the f4i for sure if I can find one, and I'll be giving the gixxers (600 and 750) a look as well. I'm going into this assuming that any 600 or 750 that I find will have been raced at least a bit...but so long as it still runs reliably and hasn't ever been dropped, I'm fine with that. Trying to stay as stock as possible, at least from the outset. I figure a duc was probably better taken care of than the average japanese crotch rocket, but you never know. Then again, the maintenance and such on a duc is also going to run be a bit more. Luckily there's a dealer up near school, so at least I'd have somewhere to get it serviced.

I'll keep everyone posted on what I find, and what I eventually get. Seeing as how I currently have the kawasaki mentioned above (any estimates on what you'd expect as far as resale goes on that?), I think I'll go for a different manufacturer just for the variety.

I currently ride a GSXR 1000. Believe it or not, this bike is only 10 lbs more than the 750! Awesome bike, but probably out of reach for the $4500 range. Another bike to consider, if you like the V-twin but don't want the service costs of a Duc is a Suzuki TL1000S or R. I had a '98 TL-S for 3 years, and put 20,000 miles on her. Fantastic bike. Got a bad rap early on for an unstable front end, but turns out that was a big myth. It was a fantastic handling bike with awesome power and a GREAT sound! GSXR's are always good, as is the R6. Hondas tend to be a bit more tame and laid back, but excellent build quality. I'd recommend staying away from the Duc's if this is your primary vehicle... they are sweet, but very tempermental with valve adjustments needing to be done twice as often as the japanese bikes. One other consideration is the VTR-1000 honda... the superhawk. Great power.... the suspension was a bit lax for me though. Good luck, and let us know if you have any other questions! 2 wheels are always better than 4... :) Cheers!

Yep, forgot to mention something else: no real preference for a v-twin over a four cylinder, either. Just so happened that my first bike was a twin, and the ducati that I learned on (no, I do not EVER recommend doing this) of course was one as well.

And the post above this one mirrors my own sentiments: I'd love the 750SS, but as a daily driver I just have reservations about it. It's probably a bit easier to get going than the 900SS...but the limited turning radius alone would make me reconsider.

I'm leaning more towards suzuki or honda at the moment, based on my own preferences and the advice given thus far. Honda for reliability, and suzuki because their 600s and 750s are quite nice and, less importantly, because fewer people own them around here (heh). I'd really like to be able to find a gixxer 750 in good shape, but we'll have to see how lucky I am.

You know, I'm really considering changing the title of the thread to the correct spelling...but pride and laziness prevent me from doing so.
