I think it's partly instinct and partly not.

True selfishness, and it is all upbringing. I don't believe that anyone is born with "morals."

Instinct is to reproduce, so to live "morally" reasonably has nothing to do with instinct...

Uh, Buddhism includes some rather clear definitions of right and wrong.

A Christmas Carol had a big influence on me.

I was always scared of ghosts as a kid. :D

yea but not morality
Morality = a standard of right and wrong. Unless I am grossly mistaken.

And the definition of right and wrong is defined by what?

Or maybe it does, and we should all be "doing it" a lot more.

Definatley how we were raised. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, even since I read that quote ( i think here on ATOT ) "We are just a process of evolution." I wonder to myself why I live my life by these high morals, why I work my ass off to get into University, where I'll end up working hard to get a carreer, in which I'll spend my time working to get money.

Why can't I just go get high & laid 24/7 and enjoy life? If we all end up the same in the end, what's the difference?

Gah!

Heh. Very profound. :)
You do it because you want something more than what you already have. See my post above.

a combination of nature, education, and the capacity to be moral without any large consequence

Interesting that there were no replies to this point that suggest that people believe morality is derivative of Christianity and the Bible. Usually there's at least one in the bunch. Morality, I believe, has nothing directly to do with religion, and is achieved through cultural concensus and to some extent through application of the Golden Rule, that you treat others as you wish to be treated yourself.

What do you mean by "morality"? Are morals rules dictated to you by some organization such as the Church? If so, gullibility motivates people to live "morally".

Other people are just good people, and do what they believe is right, not what someone else tells them is right.

Until age 16 or so it?s the way you are raised, after that its people around you that make the most impact. So if you are with group that don't have allot of morals chances are you will lose your also over time unless you are also around people that have morals.

But what "motivates" them to do so?
