I need a monitor which will save space because i am a living in the dorms right now, i will be using it mostly for games and photoshop and of course it cant be to expensive... College student = no money. I was thinking about a flat panel monitorbut some people have been telling me not to do so. I am also looking for a screen that is no less then 17" viewable.

I also have a few questions
what is depth when it comes to monitors?
what should i look for in monitors?

hope you all can help me, and sorry if i put this in the wrong forum or something. im new here =)

Welcome to AnandTech. You might want to look here for some feedback.

Since you have no money, you might want to stick with a flat screen CRT.

you can find "fairly" cheap flat screens, such as the Rad 5, there are a few in the 300$ price range, dont support ultra high resolutions, but they arent too bad ..

Search the forums here about Samsung monitors. I do not personally own one, but I recommended one to a friend when they asked about cheap monitors. They are completely happy with it. Here is a sample thread on the topic.

I personally went for the more expensive Sony, because in the past I had good experiences with their quality. However, I have been hit by the dwindling Sony quality control and my old Sony 15sf has outlasted (and still running after 10 years) two RMAs on newer Sony's (F500).

Maybe anand should start a "Help me decide" section on the forums. Seems like the hardware section is getting really cluttered up with these kind of posts (i.e> what do you think of my rig, which cdrw, which monitor, help me decide on a sound card). :)

I have been thinking what is really needed is a FAQ poll section. "What is the best brand of GeForce 3?", "What is the best video card under $150?", "What is the best 19" monitor?", "Should I go with home theater speakers or computer speakers?", "What is the best IDE hard drive for under $X?", "What brand of CPU should I get?", "What is the best soft-modem?", "Should I buy a softmodem or hardware modem?" (Yes, this one is a FAQ. I just don't agree with the FAQ), "What is the best cable modem?", "What is the best printer?", etc.

One would probably need different categories for the different price ranges, size of monitors, etc.

This section would only be effective if new products were added and people could update their polls.

I haven't really suggested it because it would be a lot of work to program and maintain. I am still not certain if people would even use it or not. It's the best solution I have been able to come up with. That way people don't have to keep answering the same questions over and over again. Or at least it is as simple as "look at this poll."

I could explain this to you myself, but I'm lazy--so I'll let Thomas Pabst do it for me. ;) CRT Monitor Technology
In addition to cold, hard statistics, subjective reviews and opinions are also important. Hitatchi monitors may have obscenely low grill/mask pitches, but I think that Mitsubishi monitors look better. My personal favorite CRT is the LaCie Electron 22 Blue III, but that's expensive.
