<< Anyway, what's this about lines on a Trinitron? >>

The lines are from some kind of guard that holds the tube steady. You just see these faint horizontal lines at like 1/3 the way up and down the screen, but you can really only spot them on a white field. On most colors, you can't even notice them.

<< I got a Sun 21 inch monitor and I am running at 1600 by 1200 @ 72 hz. It is awesome. :D >>

**high five cashman
I actually have 3 Sun monitors...if you don't mind the limited choices of resolutions, they rock.

the lines are from the grile that makes up the picture. Normal crts have a sheet with holes and trinitron runs wires hozontally and verically

my monitor is the best LCD on this planet > sgi 1600sw (17in widescreen 1600x1024)
by the way its way brigter and has more contrast that my 19in i had before. For example i can see that white graphic that was supposed to match white background actually doesnt match. Its very obvious on the lcd.

About refresh rate - i can very much tell the flickering on anything under 85hz

<< 1280@60Hz isn't suck...your eye can barely detect anything over 60Hz anyway, so who cares? >>

60Hz refresh rate doesn't suck? If I look at 60Hz refresh rate for more than like a minute my head starts to hurt. I can instantly notice when the refresh rate is that low. My eyes would be more screwed than they are, and I would have constant headaches if I had to look at 60Hz all the time. That's why I care. 75Hz is pushing it for me too. Anything under 85Hz and I start getting headaches.

<< I never really thought about how important the monitor was till I saw the monitor I suggested my bro get for his new computer. He got a Samsung SyncMaster 753DF. The specs suck, 1280 @ 60 (like my old 15" optiquest) but it looks damn sweet. It's very crisp even at maxed out settings. 85Hz at 1024 is plenty, and it looks very very nice. And it's very flat. Damn, now I want a monitor like that. :(

What about you? Care about the monitor?

I've got an Iiyama Vision Master 17 (really old model from 1995). It does have BNC inputs, though, which is nice, but it is not perfectly flat. Usually I run something like 1152x864 @ 85hz or 1280x1024 @ 75 hz.

<< 1280@60Hz isn't suck...your eye can barely detect anything over 60Hz anyway, so who cares? Although I'm running 1024@75 on like a 13" right now and I can detect some flickering...and this thing is like 2.5 years old. Anyway, what's this about lines on a Trinitron? My local Sam's has them for like $150 and they were recommended to me by a friend who used to work for a digital graphics company and that's all they used - he didn't know the specs (anyone here know 'em? I'd like to know) but said they had a real flat tube and were great. Anyone know about the CTX Ultra Screen 19" That's what my dad has and it seems pretty nice. Not sure what the specs are. Ehh I was going to say something else that was mildly important but I forgot. Fark. Oh well.

What is this you're rambling about refresh rates? Your eye can barely detect over 60Hz? Yeah, maybe your eye. But anything under 75Hz is painful to look at for me. I still see the flicker at 75 and even 85, but at 75Hz it's not so bad, and 85 is totally useable although not flicker-free. At 100-120Hz I have not yet been able to detect any flicker at all.

Me too! It's got to be 70+Hz.

I have a 19" KDS VS-195e 1600x1200@75Hz

If I had $450 I would get this Cornerstone P1460!

Same here. 75Hz is too low for me. After 10 minutes my eyes hurt and I have a headache. At 85Hz everything is OK.

Hm. Maybe the fact that I'm pretty damn nearsighted (20/60 in one eye) has something to do with my resistance to low-Hz-induced headaches. I have to actively look to find flicker, and I don't get a headache. My eyes get like dry and sore if I stay on my computer all night, but I always attributed that to the simple fact of staring at a screen all night in the dry house air...

I use an old KDS 15", its a refurb I got about 3-4 years ago for $100. I've been running it at 1280x1024 @ 60hz for the last 2ish years and I have never gotten a headache, I can't even see any flickering.

I never noticed how bad my 14" monitor was at 60Hz until I got a job and worked aall day on a monitor doing 85Hz. I guess after my eyes got accustomed to that, the 60Hz just hurts

<< I got the 753DF for TheBlondOne when I built her system.

I'm still stuck on a 15" POS. I have a 17" LCD on it's way to my house (will probably arrive today or tomorrow), but I had second thoughts & plan on refusing the package.

I don't know if it's because of dryness in your home, but I can stay in front of this computer (usually 1152x864 on a 15") for 15+ hours without a break and not have a problem. Maybe you should see a doctor about it.

I use a Planar 18.1" digital flat panel at home. I don't worry about refresh rates any more. If I even look for a second at a monitor that is set to 60Hz, I immediately start to get a headache. My work monitor is a POS ViewSonic, but it does 1024 at 75Hz which is good enough for me.

ViewSonic G790 that I got for a bit under $500 about 3 years ago. I run 1280@85, with no flicker. (run it at 60 and stare at the windoze taskbar for a while, I dare you!)

I love this monitor...

I can sit for awhile at mine doing normal office stuff and web browsing.

When I play games for hours on end (especially FPS's) my eyes get dry and tired. I think that I don't blink as much...

Amish: AH, that's it! Now that I think about it, I DON'T blink as much when I'm playing marathon sessions of UT...that explains the dry soreness. Heh. Thanks for the reminder.
