I am stuck between the Abit Is7 and the Asus p4p800. I'm a die hard Asus fan, but I want to expand my horizons as well. What do you all think?

Computer Power User mag (CPU) ran a review of i875P mobos in their July issue.
Asus P4800 Deluxe slightly edged out the rest performancewise, but Abit IC7-G Max2 Advance was high also and costs a bit less.

At his point, I am planning on getting the Abit sometime this summer.

Id get Asus P4P800 deluxe as well. It has ide raid which the IS7's dont. It does seem to always be the top performer in benchmarks. IS7-G is a good buy also I think. The mobo I really want is the Asus P4C800-E, but that is $200. That is kind of pricy for a motherboard.

Do the $20 ATA -> SATA adapters handle more than one IDE hard drive, or do you have to buy one adapter for each IDE hard drive? If the latter, wouldn't a $20 IDE RAID card be a better solution?

Please educate me on this issue.

Sata adaptor(s) would enable you to run sata raid using regular non-serial ata drives?

If so, I take it there is no IDE raid functionality on this board, just sata raid?

Also, doesn't the abit board come with an "EIDE to serial converter", if that s the same as the adaptor mentioned?

one converter per drive, and i'd like to use onboard raid rather than a PCI card

and the ic7 G comes with an adapter, not an ic7

Don't base your judgement on getting the P4P800 just because it has ide raid. I've read several reviews and user feedback saying that the performance is horrible when using them, and that they use more CPU resources than they should. Thats what made me just pick up the IS7 and buy a pci ide raid card.

In combination with an IS7 would you recommend:
1. A $20 Silicon Image-based RAID card, or
2. A $40 - $50 Promise or Highpoint RAID card, or
3. Two EIDE -> SATA converters for $40 - $50?
