What mobo/ram should I get for my Opteron 165?

I need a 939 mobo that's good for overclocking and some RAM that is O/C friendly as well. Please keep in mind that I do not need my ram to give me points on some benchmark, All i want is something that will allow me to overclock the CPU to somewhere around 2.6 Ghz. If it does that, I don't give a flying f*** about the latencies. I currently have 2x512 PC2700 from Samsung but I don't think I can use those...can I?

I also need a good cooler/fan combo. I was looking a the Big Typhoon as it seems a good compromise between quiet and cool. What do you guys think?

And that's about it I think.

If you are looking for budget motherboard with nice reviews, then there is a ASRock Motherboard for $65 shipped.

If money is not a problem then MSI platinum SLI OR DFI lanparty SLI

Only DFI is proven to have consistant over 300htt... (the only reason I don't have it is you can't put passive HS on chipset because it's under video slot!)

Only Ram I'd get is Ballistix right now... PC3200 is $60 for 512MB shipped and will run 2-2-2 and will OC as well. Course I'd just use your ram and a divider.. you'd be surprised what DFI could do for it... more volts etc.

No, I'm not looking for a budget motherboard. Not looking to waste my money either though :)

would the Big Typhoon fit on the DFI mobo? Would I have a problem with the video slot?

Also, what's a divider? I'm definitely interested in giving my ram a shot before I splurge for new RAM I might not need. If you could gime me some more info, I'd appreciate it.

Ah, and I'd also like to know which DFI mobo to get. I have no use for LAN, Raid or firewire and I can do without an embedded gpu. The only thing it MUST have is Sound.

If you can help, please answer, I'd like to order all the components by the end of the day.

Thanks for your time.

Yes the big typhoon will fit it. I would go for the Ultra D unless you want it to have SLI. The memoy divider will run the memory at 200/166/133/ or 133 (the dfi has some more but I do not remember all of them. So you can use a divider (ex on your memory it would be 166 so it runs at default).

I would advise against the Big Typhoon. Get an XP-90 or XP-120 or Scythe Ninja, or Zalman 7000-7700 series. Those Tt's are horribly built, and noisy.

Sounds to me like you are looking for a budget motherboard ;) ... prob best off with the DFI NF4-D (The non ultra variant).

Well, I do need the mobo to be an outstanding overclocker so is that NF4-D as good as the lanpartys or whatever? So many mobos, it's so easy to get lost.

About the fan, I thought the big typhoon was the quieter of the bunch. Which one is the best of the bunch you mentionned? Or if you have a link to a good comparison, I could use that too.

Is that through personal experience?

The NF-D Lan party is JUST EXACTLY like the Nforce4- Ultra-D Lan party, but w/o the ethernet port and some acessories. Overclocks just as well too.

The TT Big Typhoon is the best forced air cooling HSF avi. on the market atm and its very quiet, read the reviews and check extremesystems.org 's fourm for details, just because its a TT product does not automaticly mean its bad.

Correction: without the second LAN port and without Firewire. I believe it doesn't have RAID and only has 2 SATA1 ports.

Bullshit...those coolers i listed above would eat that thing alive.

Want proof, look at the bottom of that heatsink. It is pitiful (ridges, scratches, unpolished). Not only that, thermaltake doesn't make a silent product. THey can claim it all they want. SilentPCReview wont even go near them.

Ah, I just realized that I actually need a motherboard with AT LEAST 4 SATA ports. I plan on having 4x250 SATA HDs and maybe even 6 of them later on. Don't care about IDE, it's old and busted :)

ah, and after reading 4 or 5 fan reviews, I still don't know which to get...Quiet is a plus, and if I need to add a fan, please let me know which fan.

And I think I'm gonna need a 7800GT so if you know where I can get a decently priced one, lemme know.

thanks again.

lol, TT big typhoon is on par with Scythe Ninja and beats xp120 and xp90 easily. And yes, the fan on big typhoon is really quite for stock fans. I mean how loud can a fan be spinning at 1300 rpm?

Well Abit can reach 300+ HTT too! Sorry Zebo I just love Abit lol! Your AN8 Ultra can't reach more than 300?

The Typhoon fits on the DFI board, but it is very difficult to install.

The screws supplier are very short and the H plate does not bend enough to mount on the DFI.

I used the DFI screws (a bit longer) and pre-deformed the H plate a bit.

You have to make an incredible force to mount it and it is very VERY risky. I almost destroyed my board when the screwdriver got loose - it is also out of the angle, as the screwdriver cannot be vertical (the cooler is on the way). I was very lucky - it didn't scratch anything important.

I bought today a Thermalright SI-120 and will remove the Typhoon. The Typhoon works great and it is silent, but a pain to install on the DFI.

First hand, I do not recommend the Typhoon for DFI owners - use at your own risk.

I see, thanks for this information. I'm surprised nobody mentionned this before. You'd think this would be a pretty popular combo.

Ummmmm well... helicopter rotors vary between 225 & 400 RPM but you mean a fan smaller than that, right

:)

Gamingphreek nope those coolers will not eat the TT typhone, heck they do not even beat it. I have all of them, Yes I like to try a lot of stuff so I do not like to rely on reviews or other people. I have a 948U, Xp-90, XP-90C, XP-120 SI-XP120, Zalman ALCU, and the TT Typhoone and out of all the tt is the best. I did not have any problem to install at all. I do not use the t bracket on the back of the mobo but the DFI or whatever motherboard back plate and only use the t bracket on top of it and it is so easy to install. Yes you might make the XP90C and the 120s perform a little better with tornado fans but on silent mode the TT wins (at least on my experience). I like it a lot and I recommend it. I use the 948U and it gives me the best temeratures when I decide to remove the IHS :). The performance difference is small though so I would recommend the one you can find the cheapest.

Well if you want to overclock like hell and don;t wanna go expensive then ULTRA D is your choice hands down period.

This is coming from a great experience after using 5 different Motherboards.
