I'm looking for a decent laptop that will game better than my old desktop. I have a slow cpu and a radeon 9800XY. My current rig will run half life at medium settings with some slowdown and doesn't really run prey well... too much slowdown.

I'm considering this laptop ACER but how does the X1600 video card compare with a desktop R9800XT?

Well the X1600 laptop appears to more than exceed my current rig, and the laptop i'm considering has a much faster cpu than the one that article benchmarked.

I think I'll have to pull the trigger, i haven't seen any laptop within a few $100 of the Acer that has equal specs.

Personally I'm not a fan of Acer's on the low end. Quality is lacking and support is ridiculous. You get what you pay for

hmmmm i have a 20" wide screen Acer lcd which is a P-MVA panel and it's unbelievable. I've also read 100's of reviews of acer laptop owners that all say the machines feel very solid.

I don't know, guess it just depends on your luck. I'd also love to drive a beamer M5 or mclauren... just can't afford it.

My laptop's MR X300, when OCed (which it does, like crazy), is faster then a 9700Pro. I'd say a MR x1400 is the minimum for a mobile GPU faster then your 9800Pro. An MR x1600 should blow it out of the water.

How? A 9800xt has double the amount of pipelines of the MR x1400. The MR x1600 however, has 12 pipelines, as opposed to the XT's 8, so to see a performance gain from your desktop to a laptop the bare minimum will be either a MR x1600 or a 7600 go.

The Acer is an excellent deal for what it's configured with, but those things run HOT! And I have yet to hear a good thing about Acer's support for their laptops. But all the negatives aside, you won't find a better laptop (graphics-wise) for that price.

OK, according to Wikipedia, an x1400 is a slightly overclocked x1300, which is slower then an x1600, so throw the x1400 out. Also according to wikipedia, the MR9800 is based on the x800 core!

The x1600 , as long as you don't get a Hypermemory version, should perform on-par or faster then your 9800xt. It has more pipelines (12 vs 8), but the XT has more memory bandwith. Best thing you can do is get and bench it, if it's not fast enough, return it.

Acer LCD != cheap Acer laptop

Acer doesn't even make their LCD's, at least they design their laptops.

Correct sir. MR 9800 > MR X1400

For the last time....

MR 9800 = 8 pixel shaders
MR X1300 = 4 pixel shaders
MR X1400 = higher clocks than MR X1300, 4 pixel shaders
MR X1600 = 12 pixel shaders

MR X1600 > MR 9800

The OP isn't asking for a comparison to a MR9800, but an AGP 9800XT, which has both a higher memory bandwidth and higher fillrate then the x1600.

Oh, and you basically re-stated what I said, but in a far more condescending manner. No need to be an ass.

9800 = 8 pixel shaders 8 pixel pipelines
x1600 = 12 pixel shaders 4 pixel pipelines

the 9800 should be faster. the 4 pixel pipelines really cripple the x1600

MR X1400 is slower than MR X1600? Nope, that is what I was correcting

So you're saying an MR X1400 is faster then an MR X1600, and the MR x1600 is faster then a 9800? Therefore the X1400 is faster then a 9800, therefore contradicting yourself!

Ok Acer doesn't make the panel... but they make the housing, backlight etc. The entire monitor is very high quality.

But true, maybe they make good lcd's but sucky laptops. Still, good specs for that price.

Honestly, I doubt Acer makes the housing or backlight. More than likely they buy it from an ODM and just have a unique housing fashioned on it.

7600 and x1600 both pwn 9800xt.

My advice? HP = good enough, Lenovo = awesome, Apple = awesome...if you can afford it.

Dude, the MacBook line IS windows native. Every bit of it.

It's not cheap, but the MacBook Pro is a fine gaming laptop.
