I had a laptop with a P4 3ghz HT processor. It broke, I took it in for service, it took over 60 days and they didn't fix it. Since I opted for the product service plan, the store now owes me a new laptop of equal or better specs.

The store currently doesn't have any laptops with P4 3ghz HT's. I'm wondering what mobile processor(s) are around the same? and which ones I should avoid?

I'm assuming that the AMD 64 X2 mobiles and Core 2 duo's are better, but what about the Celeron M's? I just want to make sure that the replacement they give me is at least as good as the one I had.

About a 1.8Ghz Pentium M would be equal to that, same for Core Duo, and I'm pretty sure even a 1.6 C2D would be equal to a 3.0P4 even with HT.

edit: Celeron Ms are the same as Pentium Ms except they lack things like speedstep, so if battery matters don't get a Celeron (then again you just came from a P4 so a Celeron should work too :D ). As for the Turions, they match up against P-Ms pretty nicely, and Turion X2s match up pretty evenly against Core Duo, but they're a step behind C2D at the same clocks.

also the celerons usually have less cache and are lower performing. Celerons =

Ya that's pretty accurate, my old P4 3.0GHz Prescott desktop isn't as fast as my E1505 Core Duo T2250 (1.86GHz) laptop.

Maybe they should make a quad core Pentium M.

The Quad Core Xeons are suppose to run pretty cool, but they would probably not fit in a laptop.

I think there will be A Dual Quad Core Xeon in the next MAC Pro.

This post was produced on my 1.2 gig Tulatin Core Celeron with 256k L2 Cache.

You can get a P4 641 3.2 gig Cedar Mill EM64T Processor for $75.00 which is a desktop processor. I might build me a new computer with this processor. Would be pretty good for a low-end computer.

my core duo T2050 (1.6) is significantly faster than our office desktop (P4 w/HT 2.8GHz). as in it's noticeably faster

Yes but your Core Duo is dual core, I mean each core is equivalent to one P4 2.8, that doesn't matter for some things though, so maybe it's because the office desktop is old and in bad need of a defrag, or its hard drive is actually slower than your new-ish laptop's HDD. Whatever the reason, you can't really go wrong with today's laptop CPUs.

well I just got back. They gave me a brand new Toshiba A100-VA5.

Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5200
1GB Ram
120GB SATA
DVD Super-Multi Drive +/- DL
15.4" Widescreen XGA TFT With TruBrite
Windows Vista Home

I'm very happy with it.. It's much better than the one I had before

You really lucked out, that's night and day better than the old one, especially in terms of heat/power efficiency as well as performance.

Definitely, along with double the battery life, if not near triple.
