What might cause a website to display differently?

k, I've got a question about what might cause a website to display differently on different machines all running IE. My uncle works for a real estate agency and just got a laptop to use at work and they use the MLS site for their listings and that stuff. Anyway, he's having a problem getting the site to display everything correctly on his laptop, so he brought it over to our house today to see if we can figure out what the problem might be. We tried the site on my laptop, my dad's laptop, my uncle's laptop, my dad's desktop, my desktop, and it's been tried on my uncle's desktop at his house. So far, the only two machines that the site doesn't work correctly on are my uncle's laptop and my laptop. Below are what are probably the relevant specs on the machines...

My laptop: XP Pro, IE
My desktop: XP Pro, IE
Dad's laptop: XP Pro, IE
Dad's desktop: 2k, IE
Uncle's laptop: XP Home, IE
Uncle's desktop: XP Home, IE

As far as I know, all machines are running SP1 and are for the most part, updated and virus/spyware/trojan/etc.-free.

My dad insists that we need to sit down and compare all the processes and services and see if we can figure out where the mismatch might be. I think it's either that or some IE security setting or something. I run Proxomitron on both of my machines but it works on one and not the other so it doesn't look like it's that. I also run SpywareBlaster on my laptop but not on my desktop. I had both programs on my uncle's machine and it didn't work so I removed both and the site still doesn't work. My dad runs neither on either of his machines and my uncle's desktop has never had either installed so it doesn't look like it's a problem with either program but that's all that we've come up with so far.

Basically, my question is this: what are some settings for IE or anything that I can look at and try and change to see if it makes any difference? Getting this site to work is essential for my uncle to be able to do any work from his office, but we're pretty much out of ideas short of comparing all processes and services.

I know this post is long and thanks for reading this far if you're stil reading 🙂 Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

screw3d and petesamprs: Differences aren't just cosmetic, as in resolution. It's actual functionality of the site. There's a box on the screen that has no text in it, where there should be a menu. In the screenshot, it's below the Property Category text. It looks like a regular text box but it's actually a menu. I don't see what could be causing something like that to display properly on some machines and not on others.

Schadenfroh: Sorry, my fault, my dad's 2k isn't on SP1. I always forget that he's not running XP. He's running something current, whatever it is. SP3 or 4, I don't know.

Edit: Sorry, forgot the screenshot

My dad installed the same version of Java on my uncle's laptop that's running on his laptop and it made no difference. Doesn't look like Java is the problem 🙁

javascript and/or active-x settings under IE-->tools-->options-->security(internet-zone)-->properties ??

that's my guess

It's an .asp page so it's not a java issue, could have some .Net components imbedded even though it's not a .aspx (.Net) page.

Try updating .Net on the machines it's not working on.

Thanks, bunker, I'll give that a shot. Yeah, it makes sense that it's not Java. I don't know how I managed to miss that. My uncle came by earlier and picked his laptop up to take it over to work where someone is going to format it (*shrugs* I don't know why, I don't think it will fix anything, but it's his machine, so whatever...). I'll see about updating .Net on my laptop and see if it makes any difference. Thanks for the suggestion.
